bstone
I have an ej22 engine sitting here to go in place of my old ej25. There doesn't seem to be any lines for the charcoal canister. Does the ej22 use a charcoal canister? Is there a workaround? There is EGR on this intake but I can't find any hoses for the charcoal canister. Did some of the EJ22s have intakes come with EGR but no charcoal canister? Thanks! Edited November 9, 2011 by bstone
Fairtax4me
Some cars had the canister behind the right rear wheel under the bumper. Those will have a line that goes from directly below the fuel pressure and return lines, to right between the 1+3 runners under the intake. Just run a hose from there to your canister under the hood, then run another hose from the canister back to the purge solenoid.

davebugs
Been a while but IIR I bought a T and T' din somewhere in the small lines by the intake for cyl#3. Perhaps someone else here will have more precise assistance. Also sometimes there is a square plug (there are 2 holes in the intake above #3 and simply removing that plug and grabbing some stuff from the 2.5 will go a long ways towards figureing things out. Also recently someone here was missing some plumbing to be compatable on the 2.2 they were putting in so search for it. I may have the 2.2 intake you need but I'd have to look. johnceggleston
it would be really helpful to know what year the ej22 engine is and what year the car is???
bstone
it would be really helpful to know what year the ej22 engine is and what year the car is??? The car is a 97 OBW AT. The engine is unknown. I know it had 58k in 2006, so I am assuming it's a late 90s. I am trying to get the VIN of the original and check that way. lmdew
I just ran into this. I have a 96 L. Outback that had a 2.5 DOHC with the canister up front. The 96 Legacy 2.2 had it in the back and no lines for the canister. Two ways to go, if you pull both intakes, you can swap the fuel lines over, which have the canister lines. You will see the difference. Another member recommended just getting a 95 2.2 intake with the correct lines. That would work as well. Another member recommended putting the two diagrams side by side and then tracing the lines connecting them to the front canister instead of the rear. You 2.2 must be a 96 or later, I'd say. I am trying to get the VIN of the original and check that way. the 97 obw probably has the canister in the front under the hood next to the ABS unit, passenger side front. (but it could have it in the rear behind the passenger side tire.) i have swapped ej22s into a 97 obw and 98 obw. i noticed when pulling the ej25s that the 97 had 2 small metal lines coming out from the passenger side front, under the intake for the canister. the 98 obw did not have these 2 small metal lines. the difference was in the intake. (swap a 98 intake onto a 97 ej25 and you have a 98 ej25.) so i would guess that your ej22 is a 98 and does not have these 2 small metal lines since the canister was in the rear for the 98. so either swap in a 97 ej22 intake, or tap into the lines that ''return'' to the rear of the car and connect them to the front canister. hope this helps. I think it answers the question perfectly. So, where can I get an intake for the 22 that has both EGR and the charcoal canister ports?

So, where can I get an intake for the 22 that has both EGR and the charcoal canister ports? www.car-part.com, search for the intake from a 96 or 97 auto trans ej22 car. (40$ near me, not sure about boston.) or ask in the ''wanteds'' here. good luck.
johnceggleston
wait a minute. when searching car-part.com for a 97 intake, it returns both 97 and 98 intakes. so i would search for a 96 or a 95 unless the yard is close enough for you to go look at it and see if it has the evap lines coming out on the passenger side front. i would hate for you to buy a 97 only to find it was not what you wanted. Fairtax4me
Don't waste your money on another intake just for some little metal hoses. Run rubber lines and be done with it. It's not THAT difficult. The only difference between the two intakes is the one that came from the car with the canister in the back does not have those two metal hoses sticking off the front. Run a rubber hose from the port under the 1+3 intake runners over to your canister. Then run a hose from the canister back to the evap purge control solenoid. This is exactly the way it's done on the other intake, except you'll be making hoses with rubber, rather than metal.

One last question: is there a PCV Plate behind the flex plate on this engine? I know I replaced the one on my old EJ25 as it was plastic and leaking. Does it exist on the ej22 and, if so, should I replace it?
Fairtax4me
Yes, EVERY EJ engine (1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5) has the separator plate. Replace it. Reseal it if it's already metal.

johnceggleston
building on what fairtax said, there is a chance that the metal lines from the ej25 intake will bolt on to the ej22 intake. i don't really know. at the very least they will show you where the new hoses should tie in. bstone
The new metal PCV/Oil Separator Plate arrived and I replaced it. The old one was plastic. Also replaced the rear main seal, cam and crank seals. New exhaust manifold came today. Moved the water pump from old engine to the new. Also moved over the compatible timing components, idler and new timing belt. Getting gaskets for exhaust in morning. Going to install engine in the morning. Once I know it turns on and works I'll order a new set of wires for it. I am going to reuse the NGK Laser Platinum from the old engine.
bstone
Follow up: I went to the garage today and identified the purge valve solenoid. I found a host going from it directly into a metal line sort of behind the power steering pump. I rigged a rubber host from the purge solenoid into the charcoal canister, and then another rubber line from the exit of the charcoal canister into the metal line behind the power steering pump. Does this sound right?

Does this sound right? no, the 2 metal lines above / next to the top radiator hoes (one is larger than the other but both a pretty small) they go to the charcoal canister, which is mounted next to the ABS pump on the passenger side front. there are 2 devices on the passenger strut tower that get small vac hoses. (the same size as the hose that feeds the windshield washer spray nozzles on the hood.) these 2 hoses come off the back side of the intake manifold. one fits on a small brass nipple pointing to the rear of the manifold up high, kind of above the pcv, i think. the other one comes from under neath the intake manifold i think. one of the hoses has a small gray plastic filter in it. (the above is for the 95 - 96 ej22) later versions of the ej22, 97? - 98?, have only one hose going to the strut tower (i think they used a small ''T'' to connect the 2 hoses and eliminated one.) and then a small hose jumps from one device the other. look on your ej25, what ever small vac hoses it had need to be duplicated. when in doubt, plug any unused vac nipples.
