edrach
I'm looking for thoughts on the 5 lug conversion for my Brat. I thought I'd find a write-up here, but didn't find anything in the two pages of threads. Before I look for older threads, does anyone know of a decent write-up for this and the best approach to matching the EJ axles to the Brat? Before I look for older threads, does anyone know of a decent write-up for this and the best approach to matching the EJ axles to the Brat? going through the old threads, I found a lot of info on that subject, there is no "cleaned up" build thread because there are so many combinations, but the one listed below answers a bunch of my questions this thread I found to be especially helpful: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=85045 happy reading. 1982gl4
I did it to mine, looking at these treads really makes me want to get motivated, and figure out it's issue so I can get it running.... Anyway five lug swap stuff. The first thread is me asking questions after buying parts, and making them fit, the other is my build tread, that may have some info as well. You don't have to use ea82 control arm mounts like I did, you can re-tapor the ea81 control arms so they fit the larger ej/er balljoints http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118612&highlight=project+success&page=2 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=117101&highlight=ej+brat+project I'm currently using no e-brake as I have EJ front breaks, but may do something similar to what Pooparu did in this thread http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98829&highlight=pooparu+project+hatch&page=

Ben That's a very well-formatted write-up, but mediocre on the information. There are SOOOO many different ways to do it, so it's hard to put together one comprehensive "how-to". But, by far the best one I've seen is this one: (this link has the discussion, but the image links are dead) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87403 (and with the new pictures) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97074 In order to use 5-lug outers, and EA81 track width, your only good option for front axles is cut-and-weld, so use what you have, measure carefully, and make it what you need. There might be an EA81 axle shaft that would work with a 5-lug CV joint, but they rarely come apart in usable shape. Also, if it's an EJ knuckle, it's shaped differently to improve dynamic toe and ackerman. But that means the CV is a bit further out (the hub offset is a bit less to keep the track width and scrub radius the same). also, just a thought: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1057378
LPGsuperchargedBrumby
Before I look for older threads, does anyone know of a decent write-up for this and the best approach to matching the EJ axles to the Brat? i machined up new shorter axle shafts out of 4140 to allow me to use XT6 5 lug fronts....thats the 'correct approach' engineering wise if you can't get factory axles that fit....altho i'm kinda ruining the correctness of that by running these shafts un-tempered:lol:
