coolskaterkid Posted November 19, 2011 Share Posted November 19, 2011 I dont belive i have a spin on filter, like the newer ones. Is it worth taking the pan of to change the filter in there. I know years ago i did it on another sub, and the pan took quite a few tries to get it to seal properly. So id rather stay away from that, but if that filter is worth changing i will do it. But if you do, the 'filter' is only a screen, but cleaning it up and cleaning the sludge out of the pan would be worth it, then do the drain and fill 3 times or a flush. just be careful not to break off the tiny bolts. install them with a nut driver or screwdriver. porcupine73 Posted November 20, 2011 Share Posted November 20, 2011 It may have an external filter, if the Subaru 'TSB' one was installed, which looks like the unit below. The 'filter' in the pan is really a suction strainer for the ATF pump so not much normally ends up in there. Many transmissions in that era ended up with overheating problems because the various shredded materials from the AT ended up plugging up the lines and cooler in the radiator. Subaru wisely added an external spin on filter later, and released this 'add on' filter for those early / mid 90's units: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
