SubyGl
The faithful old family suby is finally getting a bit tired out and its time to get the transmission taken care of now thats its got a fairly fresh 50k mile ea82. Im either looking for a shop in or around Salem OR that could rebuild it for a good price or a guide and parts list on how to do it my self, ive been reading quite a lot the past few hours but havent come up with much usefull info. It's a 4wd 5 sp manual d/r. Thanks for the help Edited November 21, 2011 by SubyGl
MilesFox
search for 'governor shaft'. i am assuming you have an automatic that isnt shifting properly? Cleaning the governeor shaft is simple to try first.

ivantruckman
wow I would think it would ber cheaper to get a good used transmission from a salvage yard, they last forever, well i guess yours didnt, but they are pretty hardy
SubyGl
unfortunately not, syncro's are nearly gone and there is quite a lot of play, not to mention the bearing whine.
GeneralDisorder
It's not economical to rebuild them - it runs about $500+ in parts and the labor is pretty high - you need a press at the least and it would be helpful if you have experience rebuilding this sort of thing. If you find a shop that's willing to do it you are probably looking at no less than $1000 to have one rebuilt with new bearings, syncro's, seals, etc. Remember that it's not just a transmission - it's also a front diff, and a transfer case all in one unit - it's actually called a transaxle. When you consider what it would cost to have all three of those items rebuilt on a truck you understand why it's so costly. For under $200 you can get a good condition used transmission. Your choice. SubyGl
eesh, didn't think it would be that much to rebuild it ourselves, i did know the trans axle stuff. I'm gonna guess Craigslist or eBay for transmissions? but what do i look for when picking one other than low ish miles?
GeneralDisorder
Typically junk yard or forum members actually. Ebay and craigslist rarely have the sort of transmission you are looking for. GD
