EA81T Mods ?

Recommended Posts

What would you guys suggest for this? It's in an '83 Wagon w/ 3" lift. (Offroad Application)

Intercool, BOV, Boost Controller, Exhaust? What exactly have I been hearing about the 2wd Distributor (or was that for the EA82 only)? Howabout using an EA82 Turbo or a different one? Anything I could do to help the lower end torque specifically? Howabout different cams?

Let me know what you guys think/have done.

Thanks.

In order of effect/improvement/bang for buck:

5 speed tranny swap

Turbo back exhaust

Crossover pipe

WRX or Legacy turbo charger

Intake system mods

boost controller

valvetrain mods (Raise redline)

everything from here on gets cost prohibitive

If its for Off-Road application forget about the intercooler and such, its not needed. A bigger turbo/crossover,downpipe from a EA82T is good, gutted cat and free flow exhaust is good. 5spd D/R tranny is a must. Dont think the 2wd disty will work without alot of mods to the electrical system, probably not a good idea for a Turbo. Not to many people have done big mads to the EA81T engines (cams, etc).

When I looked at the car your buying, (your buying my pugs) it already had : ea82 turbo (I think, ask Mudrat), and a D/R 5spd, what you really need to add are:

New exhaust 2.5" turbo back (do this first, yours ain't pretty)

Limited slip rear diff, or lincolin locker

27X8.5X14 SSR super swampers X5

K&N Air cleaner and adaptor from Home Depot racing dept.

manual boost control of some sort+boost gauge

Dual core radiator, and twin fans with cuttoff switch

Besides these your prolly good to go

Free Range - This car is coming from MudRat, but he told me it had the ea81 engine in it. It's got the D/R 5 Spd. and I'm gonna have MudRat do the 2.5" exhaust on it for me.

So, an intercooler would not do me any good? I realize that it wouldn't do anything for the bottom end. Does the EA82 turbo bolt on? (The EJ22 turbo wouldn't bolt on, would it?)

Thanks.

Noah

sorry, I checked it, there is an ea 81T turbo, in 84? subaru made a water/oil cooled turbo repair/replacment kit, but an ea82 turbocharger(IHI-5 ?) crossover and downpipe will all interchange

Intercooler will keep intake temps down, always good for turbo motor, but not really required until 10+ psi boost

  • 2 weeks later...

welcome, there is only a handful of members who have ea81t's. We're an exclusive sect, lol...that will cause controversy. I'm eventually going to do the 5speed conversion, I keep getting sidetracked. My ea81t has great acceleration until i hit hills, then the 3at stumbles. I just recently found a complete tcoupe in a local junkyard. So...now I'm buying the engine and putting intake-tb-turbo on my engine to see if that will solve this stupid vacuum loss...I'm too lazy to track it down by replacing hoses. If you have any questions, theres lots of knowledge here at usmb.:drunk:

Hi there, I was suprised to see this thread revived. As it turns out, I am driving down to Oregon to pick up the car I'm buying tomorrow. (From John/Mudrat)

I discovered that the ea81t is a bit of a rarity when I was sifting through the piles of stuff about ea82t's. :D

I am very interested in what mod.s have been done and what results people have gotten w/ the engine.

Very rare...if you find stuff in a jy...scarf it right-up...otherwise someone else will get it or it might get crushed. As far as mods...haven't gotten that far yet. Still tryin to get it running to its full stock potential. Here some pics of mine

Well, I'm getting super excited to go get my car tomorrow! John is building some double tube bumpers (front and rear) that I have not seen yet. They should be pretty cool.

As for you car, Stup., I keep coming across it and it's definately the nicest example of an early turbo I've seen so far. Keep it up!

I would post a picture, but I don't have a place to put them online. And for the love of god, how do you start an Album in the photos section?

Miles, how much $$$? Did you get any pics? Do you deliver?

Thanks Noah...I definitely have an affection for these old turbos. I can't really help you w/ the album...I don't have access to it...but Brian is working on that for us. Ask Miles...he's really generous w/ his space.

the cars are 100 bucks each, i could line up a trailer and a van. i would say 200 bucks will get the car and deliver it to the carbola. the ea81 turbo wagon was parked 10 years ago, it ran, but had a bad turbo seal. but ihave an ea82 turbo and crosspipe to put on the car. if i had the car, i would sell it for what i got it for, or i could do some work to it , seals, maybe a 5spd, and sell it after.

but my concern is securing the vehicles before the guy decides to crush them, scrap metal is up right now.

suppose if mcbrat could help out, we can trailer both cars to his place, and try to get the one running, if it runs, trailer one and drive the other. if it wont run, would mcbrat hold onto the turbo wagon till we can come and get it? and if we didnt, mcbrat would have turbo parts for himself if we made a deal or such? mcbrat hollar at me................

Morning all....

Yes Noah Picked up the Wagon....He is Currently Up on a Mountain with it camping.....

We Stuck the 2 1/2 inch exhaust on it yesterday, and All I can Say is WOW.....

With the 5 speed Hi-Lo behind the Already Torquey EA-81 Turbo, the Thing breaks Loose almost as easily as FreeRange's EA-82T thats got boost and Intercooler........:)

The Only downfall to doing this Conversion, is it is Prone to eating front axles if you get on it hard off the line.....It try's to Torque steer real bad, with just a bit of Finess in 1st gear, it is Tame....:)

I'm sure once Noah gets Back to Montana with it , He'll be posting :burnout:

Later, John and Crew in Oregon.....
