EA81 info

Recommended Posts

I have a Ea81 engine that I am using for a small tractor that I am building. I don't really know much about this engine but was told it ran good when it was pulled and it was cheap so I decided to go for it. I want to strip this engine down to the bare minimum it needs to run since emissions are no concern to me. Can I keep the factory carb or do I have to try and find a different carb since there are a lot of electronics on the carb? I also was wondering about the rotation of the crankshaft bolt, I tried turning it both ways but it won't budge, just wanted to know if it was a left hand threaded bolt by chance before I put a bigger impact gun on it. It needs to come off so I can adapt a different pulley to the front to run my hydraulic pump.

Can't help with the carb, I'm about to find that out myself. The crank pulley is held on with a normal right hand thread. My impact wouldn't break it loose. I bolted a 10 foot chunk of unistrut to the flywheel, 'cause that's what I had, and used a long cheater on my 1/2 inch breaker bar.

You can install a Weber carb on it.. never done this swtch yet so not allowed by the site police to say much about it but sure others will pipe in ... you can also look above on task bar and look at the "Search" area and type subject and go from there...

The front crank shaft pulley bolt is righty tightey, lefty loosey....

Welcome!

The Weber Carb will add a li'l amount of Extra Low-end Torque, Ideal for a Small Tractor for Sure.

But it Won't "Bolt in" ... You'll Need an Adaptor Plate, either from Redline or TransDapt.

Could I Ask if you could post Pictures here of your Tractor, as Work advance?

Good Luck!

Kind Regards.

Are there any other bolt on carbs out there? It looks like I have a 1 bbl carb on there. In this application torque and HP are not needed to increase over stock. In fact I could go down significantly since I really only require about 40 hp to run the tractor and implements. Only went with the sooby engine because it was cheap and only weighed 100 lbs more than the 20 hp engine I started with.

Also where is the serial number located on the engine block so I can put a date on the engine.

For an EA81 engine, if you want Simple and Easy, I Kindly suggest you to Retrofit a Carburetor from a Datsun or Old Nissan, those are Hitachi as the one that came factory with the EA81; you could take off the one on there and search for a Datsun carb with matching Base and for Similar displacement. (1.8L)

I've done that before a couple of Times... Simple & Easy but Doesn't outperform the Stock one nor the Weber.

Kind Regards.

The ea81 came with a 1bbl and a 2bbl. The 2bbl is better and more common. You can pull one at a junkyard for $25-$35, and I think you will want to grab the intake manifold as well. It takes switched 12v, but it would be easy to install. It's got lots of vacuum ports, but you could just cap them.

So you could get the Carter 1 bbl to work or

Get a Hitachi 2bbl and manifold and gaskets ~$100 or

Get a Weber conversion ~$200-$300

Based on what you have told us it sounds like you don't want to put much money into it, so I would probably disassemble, clean, and reseal the 1 bbl. Most of us just get rid of the 1bbl, so not many people can tell you much about it, but I bet most if not all of the electric is switched 12v.

If I indeed have a 1 bbl carter on there I would bet it has a "standard" carter bolt pattern on it. But I need to finish ripping out the excess vaccum lines that run all over the place and finish ripping out the wiring I don't need also so I know what I have to work with.
