Caboobaroo
Its an old Subaru. If it ain't leaking, it ain't running..... I would do a full engine reseal. Yard the engine out and get a gasket set and do the whole thing. Also get a new clutch if it needs of. Also find the source of the coolant leak that is present on the front of the engine, drover side. Probably a waterpump and the 90 degree hose that goes from it to the upper bypass line. Also he a good time to do timing belts and components.
Skylar
Yeah, i'd like to do a whole engine reseal and pull it out but its my daily right now .. and im not mechanically inclined to do that lol nor do i have a engine hoist. i have the money to put into the car just not the knowledge . im gonna start by wiping down the whole motor today, check out the water pump and hoses as you mentioned cause i noticed some coolant down there too .. my first thought was a HG when i seen that but my oil isn't creamy nor is my coolant in my radiator .. Skylar
so i went out and grabbed all the receipts from previous owner ( only owned this car for a month now ) and he has receipts for t-belts and outer belts which were done at 207xxx and he did a clutch kit at 206xxx . so i dont think ill need to replace those, car has 221xxx now and t-belts last about 60,000 miles right ? Oh, and i'd be willing to pay one of you guys locally around here if you wanna help/teach me to work on my soob . im not a complete noob lol i do have some expierence, but when it comes down to taking the motor apart and resealing etc i get nervous. i dont want to mess anything up .. MilesFox
the first picture ooks as if the hose is leaking. it is probably cracked and brittle at that fitting. this is oil from the pcv condensing in the hse and leaking out the bottom of it. i see a spot of coolant in the 3rd pic. I would suspect the water pump weep hle or the o-ring. I would recomment replacing the water pump, and replace the cam seals. Ditch all the covers, and watch the 'art of subaru maintenance' videos. Skylar
is that a pcv hose ? man i wish this thing came with a manual that'd help so much lol and ok ill look into the water pump. shouldnt be to complicated .. and i did watch one of those videos on the timing . thanks again miles. should i get oem cam seals from the dealership ? Skylar
Well, got the water pump done. Did the cam seals but i believe i missed the front main :/ i did the ones on both the cam retainers . put new timing belts in and put everything back together. now im just waiting for the dealership to call me to come pick up my new pcv hoses. should be running great after that thanks again miles for making those videos. really helped me alot and i got to learn how to do the timing and all that ! Merrry Christmas all !
man on the moon
No one has mentioned it yet, and it is hard to be sure from the pictures but...in the right hand engine shot, the one with the PCV hose that's been commented on (check the PCV valve, too), it looks like a bolt is loose. That part that has "Subaru" stamped on it is your valve cover. If it's loose, oil WILL come out. Check all the bolts holding that on (and the left hand one, too), they are 10mm. Have fun with the one in the back, by the disty Otoh, you can get a pair of valve cover gaskets for $20 or so and it's a super easy repair--five bolts on the driver side cover, four on the passenger cover. Swap the old rubber for new, replace the covers and snug the bolts down. Nothing to align or match-mark, just pull, swap, replace.
l75eya
Be very very careful you do not overtighten those bolts and snap them though. Not fun.
Skylar
I did on the thermostat housing :/ and the ground that goes next to it ... I was changing the gasket cause I noticed it was leaking a little from there .
Skylar
So ive got that water pump and everything done, drilled out the bolts i broke in the t-stat housing and replaced the thermostat and the gasket. fill her up, been driving around for a good week now. did an oil change last night, and im doing an o2 sensor today cause it like 24 bucks. seems to be running kinda rich still, anyways. get down there to find out im still leaking coolant !! i left the center belt cover gasket out so i could access belts and water pump. and nothings coming from the weep hole, all dry around there. it looks like its dripping from the seal of the oil pan gasket .. im stumped as of right now, any input would be appreciated. im starting to think its a headgasket ? :/ its got 222,xxx miles. dont think its ever been rebuilt either . Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Its an old Subaru. If it ain't leaking, it ain't running... Well... my BumbleBeast has 27 Years, over 300,000 original Miles on its EA82 an it doesn't Leak Oil nor Coolant; maybe because I Fix anything ASAP... I've changed Head Gaskets in the past, and all the Hoses frequently. Well, about the Coolant Leak on your Subie's engine: Have you Checked / Replaced the 90º 5/8 Elbow Hose, that goes from the Weterpump to the Heather pipe? Kind Regards. El Presidente
Which side is it leaking coolant? Is it leaking in a new spot? if it is, more pics would help. Did you use sealant on your thermostat housing gasket? Did you replace the o-ring on the water pump tube? How are your radiator hoses? On the driver side, a leaky hose can cause coolant to run down the metal tube and drip off the block. Sometimes things will leak when the motor is cold and seal up when it warms up, so if you still stumped, I'd first clean your motor really good(sounds like you already have), leave it over night outside in the cold, pop the hood in the morning, wipe down any coolant you see, and let it warm up at idle while watching it. Coolant leaks on the top of the motor will naturally hug the block and drip off the bottom. -Josh
Skylar
I did check the hose that goes from the water pump to heater hose . it seemed fine so i didnt replace it but it wouldnt hurt to check again . i did use some sealant on the housing gasket, rubbed my finger around it, no liquid there. its leaking more on the drivers side . i checked the hoses and they seem dry around there too . i didnt replace them though when i removed the radiator an stuff to do the belts etc. and i just went an got some food, drove over to a buddys. come back home read this, and go under my car again and its mostly dry . i see like one small spot of coolant . so it might've just sealed back up like you said josh . ill go look at again tomorrow morning
El Presidente
What about the water pump o-ring? Did you replace that when you did your pump? It should have come with a new one in the box. That o-ring gave me hell after I lifted my rig. When I was trying to get the lower radiator hose figured out I moved the tube a little bit and the old and stiff o-ring lost seal and start leaking. I thought it was the little 90* hose, because they're right next to each other. When they're old it doesn't take much for them to fail. Let us know what you find out! -Josh
Skylar
Yeah i replaced the oring and the seal that it came with . and yep will do !
Skylar
Ok so go out this morning, and theres a drop that sits on the drivers side bolt thats in the back that holds the factory skid plate/ oil catch plate under the oil pan . wipe that off, start car let it warm up for like 10 minutes. watching it the whole time and i see no new drops. go do my thing come home, shut it off. go under and see new drops from here: little bit here: I also need to Burp my cooling system because i hear the swirling under the dash every morning i get in. Could this cause it to leak ?
Skylar
I found a tiny pinhole that was in my upper radiator hose. So i replaced both hoses and had it up on ramps attempting to "burp" the system. Not sure if it worked or not but i filled it up with more coolant, massaged hoses etc LOL and its still dripping coolant ! Theres fresh drops just sitting around the seal/edge of the oil pan gasket. Mainly in the front right behind the belt covers . So idk im done with it for now im just gonna keep driving it and check the coolant level. it doesnt seem to be using coolant so whatever fine with me LOL Drive her til she blows
Turbone
You should bring it over again, this time I can take a look at it.
Skylar
I believe I found the source of the coolant leak ! Passenger side head gasket . Yayy Only leaks when sitting over night or a couple of days in the garage . And stays dry when I'm driving it everyday . Small sized puddle built up over the past couple days . Guess I didn't look hard enough last time lol
Skylar
Is there any type of temporary HG sealant that i can stick along that seam ? Or is it HG time haha
Turbone
Save up for the whole shebang. HG's, all the seals/gaskets and oil pump kit. Get the oil pump stuff at Auburn Subaru and tell them you want the internet price. The rest you can find online for cheaper.
