Very wierd handling problem with '92 Legacy Turbo

Recommended Posts

1992 Legacy Turbo Sedan. 5spd, AWD, 4dr.

When i accelerate real hard, seems like the rear end wants to swerve to the left. When i let off the gas, the front end wants to veere to the right. Makes it very difficult to handle the car at high speeds when it wants to fishtail everywhere... and its kinda scary.

And if i hold the steering wheel steady and let the car make a wide right turn, the front of the car will steer hard, then steer back, then sharp, then back... and repeat... all without me even moving the steering wheel.

Also seems when i brake hard, the rear end wants to swerve as well.

Anybody have any ideas?

Wheel alignment is most likely the problem. I would suggest replacing all the bushings in the suspension, many will be too soft due to aging and some might even be cracked.

Then have the wheels aligned - don't bother doing this with old bushings.

If your car has a limited slip diff in the rear, then MAYBE this might be causing your yaw problems.

Legacy777, ive already stumbled upon the bbs and also the library... all i can say is WOW! What a great colaboration of subaru information. It definatly helped me out. Im thinking im going to replace ALL the bushings, and maybe even the struts. Prices i saw last night were alittle more than i was expecting.

you talking about dave's library or the stuff on my server?

What weren't you expecting price wise.....the bushings or struts.

The gr2's should run you about 65-70 a piece....which is pretty normal. I haven't priced bushings, but I'll probably end up replacing all the bushings on mine this summer.

Im talking about the library on LegacyCentral.org. WOW! The price shocker was for the suspension upgrades listed at Teagues Auto. Something like $900 to $3000. That $80ea sounds alot better. Where on the net should I start looking for a good deal on bushings and struts?

Yeah check out all the scans & pdf's on my server...... a lot of good info on there.

Struts.....look at tire rack. GR2's are like 68 bucks on there I believe. Or if you want adjustability, go with the agx's.

As for bushings.....might want to try some of the whiteline stuff, and or sti bushings..........or just get oem ones.

I believe http://www.isrperformance.com has a listing of the different bushings that whiteline offers. they are polyurathane bushings. Not sure if you want to go that route or stay rubber. Opie on the bbs posted a thread with a fair amount of the hardened rubber bushings. He did something very similar with his turbo legacy.

Is poly better than rubber?

Not sure if I need to replace my front struts, but my rear end is kinda sagging. I'd like to get alittle more clearance to clear these tires that I have on there. Do they have aftermarket rear shocks that add more lift? Not like 3" or anything.

Shocks, or dampers to a guy like me with an British education, will not affect ride height. You'll need new springs for that. H&R springs make a set for the Legacy Turbo. They are quite a serious outfit, I have talked to their techs on the phone - in my best German - and they don't mess around.

Poly bushings do not deform as much, hence stiffer. However some people report squeaking from them.....I have some poly bushings and properly greased, I haven't had issues.

I would not recommend replacing just the fronts or the rear struts. You'll get some really funky ride characteristics. I had a set of monroes on the front and kyb's on the rear.....the car had crazy oversteer.....not good when you don't want it.

There really isn't any that I'm aware of to raise the car.....

You could probably get a scorpion lift....that's about it.

yeah...forgot about that......that will mess with the damping though.....and it may give you some unexpected handling results.

All i need is about another .5" more in the rear. I'll see what i can find, but not too worried about that right now. I just got back from the shop, and while the car was in the air i took a look at the rear bushings. They are all shot. VERY badly might I add. The mechanic said they needed to be pressed into the control arms... is that true? Im going to start pricing some bushings and see what I can find. Josh, where did you get your bushings and how much did they run? Did you get bushings for front and rear? I think i might just do the rear bushings cause the mechanic said the front's werent that bad.

Brian,

I haven't replaced mine yet. I'd like to do it this summer.

I replaced mainly anti-sway bar component bushings.

http://www.isrperformance.com has poly bushings. If you want OEM, you should be able to find the part #'s in the pdf parts manual.....if not let me know and I can help you....it's not exactly the most intuitive thing to look through....plus I've got a hard copy too, which makes it easier.

More then likely you're goin to be around $250 for all new bushings in the rear for the lateral & trailing links.
