johnceggleston
it feels almost like the engine is stalling out, but that is mostly a reaction to my leaning into the acceleration when there isn't any. it only last for a second and only for the first couple of starts from stop. i did the ej22 swap about 30k miles ago and everything was new then, plugs, wires, t-belt, idlers, water pump, ..... replaced the knock last year. oil chnges every 5k. the things i did not /have not addressed aer the maf, the iac or the o2 sensors. no cels. at first i thought it was the o2 sensor, but at first start up when cold, it is running in ''open loop'' so the o2 has no input. right? as it warms up the hesitation goes away, or lessens enough so it isn't noticeable. so what would cause trouble when cold, open loop, but not once warm? propane
You probably wanted to include whether it is an automatic or manual, as this will involve the EGR if auto. And it sounds correct to equate cold start = open loop, till the O2 sensor reaches operating temp , and the feed back loop closes via coolant temp. readings. Beyond that, I'm clueless

danbennett2u
I would lean towards the coolant temp sensor giving inaccurate readings to the ECU. I dont think this will trigger a CEL in most cases.
wtdash
Hi, Yes...on the CTS and I'd also considering cleaning IAC and the MAF. GL, Td

johnceggleston
nope, definitely an engine issue. cleaning the MAF seems easy with the right cleaner, but the IAC seems a little difficult, challenging even. and the ects, can you reach it with the intake in place? Be sure to use MAF cleaner from what I've read...sure you have too. Nothing too strong either in chemical strength or pressure...that 'hot wire' is fragile. By intake I'm guessing you mean air and not the intake manifold.....this POST shows where it is and how to do it...wow..PITA! For the IAC, just remove the hose, which you'll have off anyway to get to the CTS - Right?? :-) - and spray some brake cleaner or other non-residue type cleaner. Look HERE on LC BBS for info. And a on removing it to clean it properly....the valve on the back - where it attaches - is what gets gummed up, I believe. idosubaru
doubt this is it but it'll get asked eventually - what kind of ignition wires? i had a 1997 OBS that would hesitate badly, could barely make it up a really steep grade at low speeds on the way home. i think i did get an EGR code though...after replacing the EGR and solenoid it ended up being the small round quarter sized filter on the passengers side inline with a vacuum hose. not sure if it was the filter itself or just replacing it freed up a vacuum line, doesn't seem like that little thing could cause any difference but it went from problematic for a couple weeks to gone forever and my friend has been driving that car for years since. $7 at the dealer and i think i found that suggestion online. johnceggleston
doubt this is it but it'll get asked eventually - what kind of ignition wires? subaru wires at the time of the swap, 30k ago. what is the life of a set of subaru wires. in reviewing my above post i realized that plugs, wires and air filter (~$60) couldn't hurt. and i'll need all 3 eventually. but it would be nice address the problem area directly. danbennett2u
My last set of EJ22 OEM wires came with the car when I bought it and they didnt start misfiring untill I put on somewhere over an additional 100k miles and 5 years.
