MSSLGECKO
Hi All, I headin' down to OR to pick up my sube from Mudrat here pretty soon and I'm planning on hitting up the coast and Portland. So, I thought I'd see where you guys will tell me to go. I'm planning on going to Cannon Beach then Portland and whereever else I please. I've got a few days to kill, so let's here it. Most important, however, I was hoping some of you could point me to some good camping grounds on the coast as well as in Eugene (not quite sure if I'll spend a night there or not.) Thanks Dudes. -Noah
msatpro
Cougar hot springs is west on 126 and south of it a bit near Cougar resovoir. Special spot for me because I found a dog there- Franklin, that had a hurt paw etc.. great dog, collie shepherd mix. camping is cheap if not free. Be prepared to see more clearcuts up there than old growth. Something like less than 5% of old growth left in the state. You know it will be raining probably right? it rains all winter pretty much Camping on the coast would be fun for a day to, water is cold and usually no sharks, just sea lions up north. MSSLGECKO
I have checked out the sea lion caves, not bad. You guys brought up a good point....rain. Damn it. How has the weather been of late? Hopefully that won't be too much of a burden. We'll see. -Noah
msatpro
hey if your coming in from Missoula, you shoul let me tell you the most beautiful drive I have ever done. Driving from Chicago, I went through missoula and south down onto 12 at which point I turned immediately around and slept for the night in a hot springs(pool) parking lot, due to the INCREDIBLE ammount of wildlife on that dark and empty road. Good thing to, because I was able to view route 12 in all its glory through walla walla oregon & walla walla washington, connecting to the columbia river gorge etc.............................Beautifull.....Hmnnnnnnnnnn Anyway you should probably camp in the high desert anyway. keep an eye out in the walla walla's for the strangest "road signs" ever (written on the road in paint)
SubSandRail
Bring a ringnet to catch crabs, or a surf pole and a crab rig (cheaper if you already have a pole) to catch crabs while you are along the coast. Oregon used to allow free crabbing, now it is cheap ($9 for a non-resident 3 day pass). Check out: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/Regulations/2004_fishregs.pdf Florence is a straight shot over from Eugene, and they have a public crab dock. Show up with gear, fresh turkey legs, and have the locals show you how it is done. You can buy everything you need at the hardware store in Florence for $30. While you are there, go down South Jetty road and have some fun at the Oregon Dunes. Make sure you have soft wide tires and deflate them to 4 psi before you get out on the sand. You will need an orange flag on a 6' pole and a pass that you can buy in town. It would be best if you found somebody in the area to go with if you have never driven in deep sand.
