A guy wants to trade me his 1997 Subaru Legacy GT with a 2.2 in it for my ATV I was selling.

The Subaru has all these codes.

P0325

P0400

P0500

P1507

P9141

I know the 325 is the Knock sensor the 400 is the EGR the 500 is the speed sensor and the 1507 could be a vacumm line or the IAC might need replaced or cleaned.

I figured if I replaced the EGR,Speed Sensor and Knock sensor it will be around $400 with shipping.

If I cleaned the IAC and EGR is it possible that is all that is needed? ANy help would be appreciated greatly.

SOmeone here is selling Knock's cheap - I think under 30 bucks.

The speed sensor I've never done and could be the most difficult and expensive.

The IAC used or try and clean yours.

Vacuum leaks - well - cheap hose.

EGR used.

I have IAC and EGR's for sale used if you have none local - PM me.

do both rad fans come on when you start the car?

do you hear a lot of relays clicking at start up?

if yes, then check the green ''test'' connector under the dash. dis-connect them. they are not supposed to be connected and they will throw a boat load of codes when they are.(i would look at them first and if they are connected, not tell the seller. he may change his mind about the deal.buy the car and then dis-connect them.)

my second guess would be a bad wire connector under the hood, passenger side at the rear of the engine. unplug all the connectors in that area, check to see if the pins are all in good condition and re-connect.

this is way too many codes to be real, unless he has been driving it for years and collecting codes as he went.

how many miles?

how long since the 2.2L swap was done? (97 GT came with a 2.5L engine)

who did the swap ?

has it ever run right since the swap was done?

what is your atv worth?

the ej22 engine is a great one. it would have to be really bad to throw it away.

EDIT: how does it run???????

WOW thanks for the fast replies. I am making the trade tomorrow now I know all this. I haven't seen the car other than pictures and it looks really nice. It only has 100k miles and has new tires and other parts he had put on it lately.

I looked up the blue book and I think if I spend the money on all the Sensors I will be far ahead on the deal.

Thanks again.

The 2.2 is way more durable.

It's possible the vacuum issue has from when the swap was done.

And how long ago the swap was done and by who.

Make SURE is has an EGR on the engine. If he put a 2.2 that's too old in that car you'll NEVER fix the CEL due to the EGR code.

Then you're talking a "correct engine" and perhaps matching Y-pipe. And if they weren't smart enough to source the proper engine who knows what else you may hit.

LOOK for an EGR BEFORE purchase!!!

Assuming the car is in decent shape, I'd say go for it.

John is on the right path, it sounds like someone did an engine swap and the codes are there because something isn't kosher with the swap. He might have used an engine with no EGR in a car that had it from the factory.

There's no way around that, you just have to deal with the code, or get an engine that has the EGR.

But it could just be the Test mode connector under the dash. In that case it's fixed in 3 seconds, and free! :D

I was looking at some site that showed a 1997 Subaru Legacy with a 2.2. And by the way I was selling the ATV for $900

Here it is.

there are lots of 97 legacys with the 2.2L engine. but the 97 ''GT'' was an upscale car with a 2.5L engine and ''sportier '' set up. alloy wheels, power antenna, sun roof, roof rack on the wagon i think, hood scoop, maybe a factory cd player and / or leather. probably some other stuff too. edit: remote entry.

mine looks like this, but with different wheels .

ok, this sounds like a pretty good deal..................

BUT, if it needs a head gasket would that make it a bad deal for you?

the 2.5L engine from the late 90s has a tendency to blow head gaskets. it is hard to imagine that an engine that is 15 years old has not had them done but you never know.

look for really black gunk in the radiator overflow bottle.

ask about the head gaskets.

ask about overheating of any kind.

and if possible take it for a 30 minute test drive on the hiway. around town driving may nor cause it to over heat.

Yeah with only 100k miles in good condition and you thinking you can get $900 for your ATV, I would say this is a killer deal. Expect to do headgaskets at some point in the future though, but even if you dont and they blow you might still be able to get your $900 out of the car if you sold it after they popped

Well I got the car tonight. Looks pretty good on the out side and the guy did drive it over here from 65 Miles away. The heat gauge was at a normal warmed up setting. The engine idles real smooth.

Now to address some issues.

1ST. It has 219k not 100k Side note I would assume if it needed head caskets it already got them changed out.

2.nd the interior isn't great No big deal.

3rd. All the codes. I looked around some and am not sure where that cluster of wires you mentioned to check out.

The Green connection under the dash is not hooked together.

It has big rims on it so that could explain the Speed Sensor problem.

The IAC and EGR might clean up. They looked original.

He put a new drive axle on the back.

2 New Tires

Alarm which he showed me how to use in case the battery goes dead.

He said the sun roof sticks sometimes. (no big deal)

Just so you know, I bought this just to use as a back up car in case I need it. OK I have a Car and a SUV but one more never hurts.

2 New Tires

Possibly the most painful words that can be uttered in the AWD Subaru world.

Tires on these must match perfectly in size AND wear level at ALL times or damage to the transmission center transfer unit WILL occur.

Get 4 new tires for it asap.

The wheel size will not cause the speed sensor code. Vehicle speed is measured at the transmission, chances are the wiring is damaged or unplugged. Worst case the drive gears for the sensor inside the transmission are stripped. That's a lot of work and something you just live with unless you feel like taking apart the transmission.

The sensor isn't hard to change though and they don't usually go bad so a junkyard part could be swapped in cheap if it needs to be replaced.

Thanks for reminding me.

I have a few questions:

1>What is the about 1" tube just above the IAC? It has a lot of Electrical tape wrapped around it.

2>Are there special Vacuum lines? I checked out some lines that looked new on the device above the EGR and they slide right off and on. I would figure they are the wrong type or size and are not holding vacuum.

3>Are the Subaru security systems any good? The wires are hanging down from it and the PO told me he cut the wires to the horn on the system because he couldn't get it to shut off.

Thanks for any help.
