MexiLoyale Posted December 22, 2011 Share Posted December 22, 2011 I just completed a 6,000 mile trip from Portland, OR to the very southern border of Mexico (Whoo hoo!) in my 92 Loyale. We were loaded to the guts and went really slow up hills but the old girl did great. Just recently she has started to develop some sort of fuel delivery problem. Here's the symptoms: The car sometimes cut power and studders, mostly on acceleration from a stand still or on steep hills. Also when trying to climb steep hills at low speeds it will start to hesitate and then sometimes die all together. When it dies it doesn't want to start again unless I wait a minute or so and then when it does start I have to pump the gas continuously before the rpms will get above 1000. It seems a little better when not loaded down with stuff or once I'm on the highway cruising along. I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump after a mechanic here assured me it was the fuel pump. It seemed better for a day or so but then once we were loaded up again and on the road, it was just as bad as always. I also thought about the MAF and tried unplugging it, but then the car wouldn't accelerate hardly at all. I don't really know what that tells me. MilesFox Posted December 22, 2011 Share Posted December 22, 2011 maybe the coolant temp sensor is bugging out. this explains the hard to start until it sits. It could be ignition related with the transistor on the coil overheating, with the same symptom. try unplugging the engine temp sensor (2 wires green plug, on thermostat housing) and see if the car behaves differently. The transistor is more of a consistent symptom as reported, so i would weigh on it more then the coolant sensor, which seems to act up on mainly mpfi turbo. Cougar Posted December 26, 2011 Share Posted December 26, 2011 The trouble seems to be with the fuel system from what you stated. If you haven't checked the fuel pressure I suggest you do that. That's because they Preffer to buy the "Made in Mexico" Stuff, always, also because that stuff is Tax free there (I mean their Made in Mexico cars doesn't pay import taxes). But there is a Subaru Dealer in Mexico: http://www.subaru.com.mx/ They started to Sell subarus in Mexico in year 2004 But Subarus are considered somehow as High Performance Luxury Cars there, so I only saw two in mexico when I went there in 2005: one in their Capital City (D.F. Tried it, but it was much harder to start, then had a lot of problems accelerating. What does that tell me? Also, just realized I'm getting a code 34, although no check engine light... It may be a good idea to clean the EGR valve also along with the MAF sensor. Check the fuel pressure. The regulated pressure should be 35psi. Do I just scrape out the ports or can I clean the actual valve itself? Any recommendations on how to do that? Also Cougar, 35 psi is correct for SPFI? Thanks a ton for your help!
