Yesterdays little adventure (or, I <3 Colorado)

Recommended Posts

We finally got a real snow here along the Front Range the last two days, so I was finally able to get out and actually use the 4hi (didn't hit anything needing lo) and my new rubber. So I took a little trip West of town and up into the Garden of the Gods with the subie, and took a few pics along the way. I know, nothing too exciting, but it was fun for me--had absolutely no problems going anywhere in the sube while watching other people still in town on surface roads sliding everywhere and driving like grandmas :-p

Still down in town on the way to the GOG

First pull off @ Balancing Rock

And over the rail into the valley (note the dinner-on-the-hoof munching grass)

Long shot of the center of the park

and driving along that

Finally, obligatory "Soobs in the Wild" shot

Today @ 38 degress people in my neighborhood with fwd cars are still stuck unable to back out of their street parking lol. Gonna have to remember to throw the tow rope in the back so I can pull people out.

It's all gonna melt by Sunday, I'm waiting for the next good pile to head our way.

That storm WAS fun :D.

I had to get to work, though, so no recreational driving for me--did get to drive around a whole lot of stuck, sliding, and wheel spinning people though. I even heard one lady scold the police (who were kind enough to push her up a small hill in the neighborhood) "THIS IS F*ING RIDICULOUS!"

Then I drove around a Chevy Tahoe spinning one wheel--the other three, and the rest of the truck were standing still. Then I got to work! And it was a good day. (And the co-worker I picked up couldn't stop talking about how my old car kept passing all the new cars that couldn't drive for anything).

+1 on the towrope.. i live here in alaska so its possible to wake up to an extra 3 feet of snow. so i keep a rope in the back at all times... nothin makes my day like shame dragging explorers astro vans jeeps and all fwd cars. lol i even got to pull a newer legacy.. i love the looks on peoples faces when i yard them out

87gl-10w 5mtd/r completely stock!

although wish they would all go in the ditch so i can do the speed limit!.. there is no reason to do 27mph on the highway.

Lol, that was fun. Although, it wasn't bad at all. My 4wd isn't working (well, it does, but it's a 3.9 in the front, 3.7 in the rear, so... not usable), and my idle is at 2800 right now (working on that), and I was still passing people. Coloradans really don't have an excuse for sucking so much in the snow, though. I happens every year. Oh well, 'tis funny to watch. Well, until they almost hit you, because of their snow driving ideas:

The idiots guide to snow and ice driving:

Strait road = Go Extremely slow, probably wanna go ahead and ride your brakes.

Very slight corner = same as strait.

Normal corner = speed up, then lock you wheels at the last moment, all moves should be sudden and jerky. If you know you're not going to be able to get below 20mph by the time you pass the stopsign, try to make the turn anyway.

Hill = When approaching a hill, be sure to stop right at the bottom to asses the hill, then, no matter what the hill looks like, gun it, as you miraculously start to make it up, be sure to alternate between full throttle and locked wheel braking. Also, try to use up as much of the road as possible, wouldn't want anyone passing you.

The top of a hill (somehow) = Better go ahead and stop at the top, you need a break. When you do decide to start going again, gun it.

Also, no matter what all of the training you've had says, you do not need more space to brake on ice.

On a side note, does it seem like out of all of the pickups that end up in the ditch this time of year, are Dodge Rams, at least in the springs? It's not like there are more on the road, just seems like there are more of them in the ditch.

On the way home that same night I did pass two trucks in the left hand ditch (on 225) facing traffic, and a car facing into traffic on the right hand shoulder. Not sure what happened, but a second truck was pulled angle-ways onto the left shoulder behind the first truck. Both big trucks.

Awesome pics in the OP, btw. Love GOTG! Need to migrate that way more often.

Oh, and thanks to Denver's 'fantastic' road clearing skills (I will leave it at that) I had the pleasure of pulling through an 18-inch plow pile tonight with a foot of snow on the other side to jump start a 4wd SUV thingy-ma-bob. Then I backed out (with summer tires)...and watched as the 4wd SUV thingy-ma-bob spun and wiggled but wouldn't go through until the guy backed it up onto the sidewalk, and we all gave it a good push and he still barely got out. I considered offering a tow-rope, but it was more fun to watch.

People in this town can't drive in snow because most of them aren't from here and are from places where it doesn't snows alot or at all. They truly do suck at winter driving (a thank you to my childhood in lake-effect snow Ohio!).

Come to think of it, for some reason they all suck at driving year round :-\

agree, I lived in Denver CO for 8-9 years and can for sure say most people there suck at snow driving. compared to Colorado drivers in snow, people here in Iowa are much better imo.

I could not believe how !-25 would be after a dusting even. Ridiculous, and yeah, living on a side street forget about snow plows. here in my small town Iowa, they plow constantly even with just a little snow.
