1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon - Loss of power in low gear when raining

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Sometimes when it's raining out and I drive through a puddle, the car seems to lose power. It happens when I'm just moseying along. When I step on it, it downshifts and is fine, but then when it shifts back, it feels like it's skipping and is working sluggishly.

I recently had the coil replaced, wires re-insulated and a new transmission.

Other than when I go through puddles, it works totally fine.

My mechanic isn't able to find the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

best,

nick

What wires were re-insulated???? The plug wires...that's preposterous, why do that the dealer has them for around $30. Why would you fix a normal maintenance item rather than replacing them..... Your mechanic can't find the problem because he isn't a mechanic.

Please stick to this thread only.

The next guess (and often doesn't throw a code) is a knock sensor.

Effected by moisture, often cracked.

The search function will lead you to lots of information.

Possible, but I'm going with the "re-insulated" wires

I had the same problem. Turned out is was the front O2 sensor that had opened up. Only when splashing through puddles, did the water enter the O2, resulting in power loss.
