EJ22t swapped EA82 trans and gearing questions

I have a 1986 GL with an EJ22T and turbo 5spd d/r. I have a 3.7 LSD in the rear.

I'd like to gear it to at least 4.11, or better yet, 4.44. The questions I have are:

1. Can this be done with the 5spd d/r, or will I have to find a different trans? If so, which car do I need the trans from?

2. I'd like to have an LSD or locker in the front. Is this possible?

3. What is the strongest clutch I can get for the 5spd d/r? I think I currently have an RX clutch in it.

4. Can you change the 4 low ratio in the d/r trans? It doesn't seem like it's low enough for me.

Thanks,

-Jason

The answer to all these questions is EJ. Theres all kinds of options with gears and clutches.

You wont get any upgrades with the old EA trans, been there already.

And its not going to last very long either, I've been thru 2 RX trannys in 1yr.

I'm just now completing my EJ trans swap and should be back on the road is about a week.

Any guides or parts lists for EJ trans swaps? I saw a little bit in the EA2EJ guide, but would like a bit more info. Also, did any EJ trans's come with stock 4.44s?

Thanks again,

-Jason

1. Yes, but you have to cut the pinion shaft and weld on the 4.44 pinion gear on the ea82 shaft. You can also start with a EJ dual range 5mt, but you have to have it imported as none where available in the states.

2. Yes, you can put in a stock LSD in the front, but it willn't hold up offroad. I think theres a helical gear LSD available, but they're expensive.

3. IIRC, the RX is the strongest EA82 clutch available other than a custom rebuilt one

4. When you put a 4.44 in a EA 5mt you have to trim the ring gear or it will hit the low range gears. AFAIK, 1.59 is the lowest you can go on the low range. If you want lower gears, put a transfercase in.

You can buy 4.44 gears new from the dealer for about $250 or you can get them from a Forester XT.

Thanks Josh.

So it sounds like I'm in the hunt for a Forester XT trans and a rear diff. Were any Forester's 5MTs, or am I better off finding a legacy trans and swapping the gears into that from the Forester?

Any idea where I can find any Forester XT trans's? What year Forester's am I looking for? Also, did both MT and AT Foresters come with 4.44s?

Thanks again.
