Subaru GL 10 FWD electrical issues

Recommended Posts

My Subaru is currently not running at all. He isn't getting any electricity to anything with the battery connected. Prior to this full breakdown it was running but then would begin to lose power (slows down to 20 mph and cannot go over). Then it would die. I would let it sit for the night and the next morning it would start fine. It does have a starter issue, but I don't know what could be causing the lack of power. Any help would be great!

dear mr moglit

happy new year

first check if your battery terminals are clean check if terminals are loose, if the alternator belt is tight enough and grasping the alternator pulley properly, the check if the alternator is actually charging use multimeter to check if curent is flowing when car is on , check the alternator brushes ,finally check or have the electrolyte in the battery checked to find out if battery is faulty.

hope this will solve you problem

A bad fusible link connection is a fairly common problem and may be what is going on from what you describe of the problem. The links are in a small plastic box mounted on the coolant reservoir. Make sure the connections inside the box are clean and making a good snug connection to the slots. Also make sure they aren't blown out which is indicated by a break in the middle of the wire though you can't see it usually.

If power is getting to both sides of the links then you need to check for power getting to the fuses under the hood. If that is good then check the ignition switch next.

Hey Cougar, I know this is an old post, but just wanted to say thanks. I had this same thing happen to me yesterday. My radio fuse blew (the one in the panel) either just as switched the car off or just as I was going to start it again. Whatever caused the radio fuse to blow must have given the whole electrical system a good because I had nothing, bupkis. All I had power to was hazards. Although that in itself was comforting. I figured it must not be too big a problem because subaru designed it so we wouldn't be stranded with no hazards :)

I always wondered what that box was, and I lifted it up off the reservoir and wiggled the wires and whrrrrrr, the fuel pump comes to life (I had left the key in the on position). I didn't ask questions, got my rump roast home. It's funny, this problem is reported many times on many sites, and nobody on any other site mentions the fusible link. Oh and to be clear, I was searching on my phone, stuck on the side of the road without my USMB log in information. Didn't want y'all to think I was looking elsewhere first ;) Thanks again Cougar and USMB!

You're most welcome for the help and it is nice to hear the USMB board helped you out. The loose fusible link connection problem is pretty common and has happened to me also. By cleaning the connections up and perhaps adding a thin piece of metal in between the connection points, so there is more solid contact, should keep the trouble from occurring again.
