thebob
First off, I'm an antique Dodge guy but my ex has a '96 Outback that she's very happy with. It's leaking pretty bad from where the rear driveshaft enters the tranny so I'm thinking its the output shaft seal(if that's what Subaru calls it). I'm frightened of modern japanese technology so my question is how would I go about replacing it? Repair manual she has tells nothing and I don't wanna just jump into it. Thanks in advance! davebugs
Welcome to the USMB. I did one of those years ago. Other than the exhaust in the way I don't recall anything special. Infact it must be common sized seal because the local parts place had it in stock. Look for a reason this went bad though.

How do you get the old seal out? Just a hook and pull sort of thing then bang in a new one with oversized socket? Your kinda vague. lol Dude she bought it from put a junkyard tranny in it, so I'm just hoping it was dried out(noticed a broken tranny mount bolt when I checked it out yesterday). She swears she didn't over/underfill it.
Fairtax4me
Seal was probably full of dirt when the PO put it back together. Straight forward replacement. Move crap out of way, yank out old seal, press in new one.
jarl
The FSM for these cars are very easy to find online. Do a search on this forum and you'll find the links. Just stay away from anyone who asks for money for it.
