cap86
Sorry I know this has probably been covered ad nauseum but I'm an older Sooby guy and need to find the answer for a buddy. Getting conflicting info on a 2000 impreza/outback sport 2.2L SOHC engine. Anybody know for sure whether this motor is interference or not? thanks C. Fairtax4me
Yup. Valve to piston interference. Only 96 and older 2.2 are NI.
edrach
Sooner or later this will become a sticky; this question comes up so often
Gloyale
Interferance. However, I've seen a few that have broken belts, right at start up or light throttle cruising with an automatic......that survived. (Manual trans driving at speed will turn the engine after belt breaks:mad:) It may be worth it to hang a belt on it and then do a compression test. Might of got lucky. rverdoold
Stupid questions (never exists): What did they change to make them from NI to interference. Do the valves open further?
davebugs
AFter this was asked yet agian I looked for a link. I believe we all think ALL DOHC's are interference and about 96 was the cutoff year for 2.2's. BTW most other brands of cars start interference around '96. But I had a link I've never used to I believe Gates belts that is supposed to be a listing of whether engines are interference or not. I couldn't find the link.
