bheinen74 Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 If you park in a attached garage, or ever will park in one, I have to strongly argue not to do this. The aftermarket ones can kill you. Imagine this, your car is parked in the attached garage, and somehow the button gets pressed or malfunctions starting the car, and then you don't wake up. They are bad in aftermarket form. coolskaterkid Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 Ive used dei products, ie viper clifford python....., ive had no issues with them, but i did install them myself, with a lot of work involved, and are not plug and play, ive never had them turn on with out the button being pressed, but it can happen when its in your pocket, so when there in the garage, i turn the toggle switch off, so it cant start. I have had the best luck with Directed Electronics alarms (Clifford, Viper, Python, etc) and the most experience installing in my own vehicles and customer vehicles. Stay away from Compustar alarms, I installed one in a friends truck and since the alarm can be put in to programming mode with the remote it makes it very easy to change settings while the remote is in your pocket. just my .02 If a remote start is installed correctly there is a switch that can be turned off to disable the remote start feature if you park in an enclosed area. But you have to remember to disable it. as for a OE plug and play for a 1999, No not that I know of, this has come recently with the can-bus driven systems in newer cars. But, I am sure the system is secure, just like any Microsoft computer is entirely safe from hacking What, you can start your car from your smartfone? cool, anybody else can too with a little work. Cool right. And remember if the system malfunctions it will cause a no start or leave you stranded. Why take that chance. Hackers can just as easily do the cutoff and make your car not start too. Fun right. IF you buy a start system, research as much as possible, many many research hours to get one that is safe and has auto shutoff after 5 minutes, etc. Do not go for a el cheapo wal mart special or ebay special. Get something from a manufacturer who makes OEM ones. Sure, it will cost alot, but it may save a death. I am failing to see how this option is obtained. I agree, DO NOT buy a cheap no name brand. The brand that I suggested can be setup in a variety of ways including using a smart phone to monitor, start, lock and unlock and depending on the installer can be done very safely.
