1992 subaru loyale 4x4 speedo

i took my car to the shop today to have a clutch and axle put in it and speedo worked on the way to the shop and when it left the shop it no longer worked. the mechanic did all sorts of tests to determine the problem and determined "instrument cluster" was bad, the cable is good.. can anyone shed some light on that??

Something quick and easy you can do is check the transmission end of the cable is all the way in. It plugs into the tranny on the passenger side, just behind the axle and about 3/4 of the way up to the top (where the axle is only 1/2 way between top and bottom, or so). If it is there, make sure it's not caught or pulled somehow, and no clean threads are showing which might indicate it's backed out somewhat. It has a plastic housing with a 17mm wrench grabby face.

 

The cable has a lot of play in the engine compartment, follow it to make sure it's not caught on something. It could have been pulled and popped out of the back side of the instrument cluster. Does it show any sign/mark of being pulled where it goes into the firewall? (Shiny spot, grease mark, change in color, etc)

 

Does your tach, fuel gauge, voltmeter, oil pressure, etc still work? And odometer? If only the odometer and speedo is broken...

tend to agree on that.

 

It could be the cable pulled loose at the speedo, but your speedo is fine it is mechanical, not known to go out.

 

So your mechanic ,when he changed you axle, pulled something loose and he sounds like the kind of guy who will just keep trying to get money out of you for little simple stuff that he prbably knows the truth it is not the cluster, but instead takes you as being a sucker for expensive stuff.

 

 

He probably reached his hand up under the steering column and pulled he cable out, so he can charge you easy cheap and pricey labor to plug it back in, all the while upsaling you on a 2 hour job....

GET a new mechanic.

 

Oh, and now i re-read about clutch and axle, i didnt catch the clutch part, yeah he yanked a littel too much on the cable and i is pulled loose at the speedo cluster or pulled loose at the trans. either way you mechanic sucks to say the cluster is bad.

I would pull the trim panel unders the steering column 1st, as you can see where the cable attaches to the speedo head that way. If memory serves me correctly, it's just about straight up from the gas pedal.

 

Not everyone is able to get there hand up there, but a pair of long (8"+) needle-nose pliers works wonders.

 

The end of the cable "may" still be on the drive attachment, but be pulled back enough to not work. Try to slide it back onto the drive.

If it hasn't come completly off of the drive, you "may" be able to push it on by pushing the cable towards the dash from under the hood.

 

It's really not that difficult to inadvertantly pull the cable off the speedo while working under the hood in that area. Been a few Members post up about doing so, MilesFox included.
