ej2.5 into a rx?

I've considered the same swap...gen II 2.5. There are two soobs that come to mind that have the ej swap, both 3 dr coupes, one had the 2.0 turbo (UltimateRX) and the other a 2.2 N/A. To the best of my knowledge the 2.2 was a daily driver until it was wrecked earlier this winter and the turbo project is not complete.

There are numerous swaps of this nature taking place in Australia, also a few EA81 and EA71 Brats with these swaps to.

Yes, I used the stock EJ tranny that came with the EJ20G Legacy engine. Yes it has the hydraulic clutch. There is an adapter plate or two out there for Ej to EA trannys, but since the EJ tranny came with the engine, why not use it, it's AWD (but the decals on the RX state 'Full Time 4WD').

Yes, give us some credit, that was the first thing we checked. I think that they gave us the wrong clutch. A normal Legacy clutch is like most others, you pull on the lever and it pushes on the throw out bearing. A Legacy Turbo clutch as well as any Subaru hyrdaulic clutch, when the lever is pushed by the slave cylinder, it pull the throw out bearing. If they gave us a normal clutch (pressure plaste), and we set it up like a hydraulic, then it would only make the clutch grab harder when we want the clutch to release. When we get around to it, we will pull the tranny and check it out.

Just that I've seen a couple wrx guys that hadn't bleed the clutch properly another guy had a bad slave cylinder..one rebuild kit and a bleed later and it worked..the Pull type clutch looks very different from a normal clutch, as I'm sure you know ;-) having said that if you have the wrong clutch in you should notice that your clutch pedal height isn't correct as the fork won't return toward the engine as it would with a pulltype as the fingers of a pushtype would get in the way..I know that info might not be relevent in URXs case because your normal pedal height is really an unknown..

 

bleh..well I'll be helping my muffler guy put an ej18x into his '85 L series wagon using fwd 5 speed cable driven legacy tranny anything I should look out for?

Kaz, I have three hydraulic clutches sitting outside of their engine, and one pull type clutch from a Legacy, I am surprized just how similar they look. The clutch we installed was an after market clutch set up, so it might look different then a stock, it did look very similar to the hydraulic clutch.

 

As for putting an EJ18 with a pull type EJ tranny, it shouldn't be a problem. The only thing is the rear corssmember for the tranny, but since you are using a FWD tranny, that may not be a problem.

Speaking of EJ18's...Are they available in the US? I saw an EA81

wagon on the BYB board that had one, pretty darn cool!

:) Yes it uses an EA82 RX tranny with the duel range and center locking diff. I welded on an EJ bell housing so I could use the larger clutch. So far it's working great.
