gl wagon transmission swap

I've got an '87 GL wagon with an AT and I'm planning on swapping in a d/r MT from an '85 wagon.

 

The MT is shorter. I've got the longer drive shaft and all of the otehr transmission related bits.

 

My problem is the transmission crossmembers are completely different. And the mounting points on the car for the AT are further back.

 

I plan to keep the MT crossmember on the MT and the AT crossmember on the car frame, then fab something that connects the two crossmembers.

 

I assume I'm not the first to do this swap. Can anyone tell/show me what they have done in this case?

The MT crossmember bolts into the chassis at the rear/ inner bolt for the radius rod plate.

 

Ditch the AT crossmember.

 

FWIW, there are some rubber washers with a spacer that are supposed to go with the crossmember.....they may or may not be in the MT crossmember ends. Big washers will work, but the vibration will be more.

One side of the MT crossmember has it's washer. Might have to hit the junk yard.

 

Also, one of the rubber dampener things that connects the MT to the crossmember has separated. Is there any way to re-adhere the rubber to the metal that it has separated from?

  1. Put all the pieces together in the proper sequence
  2. Set them on top of the cross member where the bolt hole is
  3. Insert the bolt and tighten
  4. That's all! The pressure will hold it together

Uhhh....... I don't think you get it.

 

He's talking about the trans mount....not the rubber washers for the crossmember.

 

Once the trans mounts rip, get new ones. they don't get held toghether by the mounting bolts. You can use ones from any EA82 4wd 5spd, Single or Dual range.

He's talking about the trans mount itself. And if it's torn, he needs a new one. Simply bolting all toghether won't hold the trans down.

 

The trans will sit fine under acceleration, but the tail will lift in reverse, or under decelleration/engine braking.

I should have checked back sooner. I could have saved a little confusion... but you got it.

 

I was talking about the mounts that connect the MT to the crossmember. I'll need a new one.

 

After putting everything together, I noticed that I'll need longer bolts to mount the crossmember to the chassis. (As well as a rubber washer/vibration dampener since one is missing.)

 

Thanks for all of the help. I'll make more use of the search function.

 

Now let's see if I can get it the engine all hooked up...
