ShawnW
Im looking for a donor car to get as close to a 1997 model Impreza harness since I have the wiring instructions for that year. Anybody know if 96-98 are the same as 97 or if there's a key difference? I also assume all the Imprezas have the ECM on the passenger floorboard? Ive never seen anything but that but I haven't gone looking actively either. Lastly, are the 95-99 Outback ECM's over there on the floorboard or up under the dash like 90-94? johnceggleston
on the legacy side , i have noticed a slight difference in the computer pinouts for 98OBW vs the 97. i didn't have any trouble running a 96 computer in a 97 GT. and i'm not sure if the computers changed in 98 or if the harness changed, probably the computers. i assume the impreza had similar changes in similar years. but for fewer ''ghost'' trouble codes, match the harness to the ECU. idosubaru
you know this but just to get it out, probably want to make sure EJ18 or EJ22? i've had a herd of 97/98 impreza's. 97 and 98 (and i would presume 96) are all the same as long as the EGR is the same (and even then they're still plug and play, just EGR different somewhere). it seems it might vary by area but around here i've seen impreza's around 97/98 have EGR and some not have it (eventhough with the same year, style, trans, etc). i've installed a 97/98 impreza into a 96 legacy before - plug and play. a 96 imp would also be plug and play, so i don't know what that means with wiring but if it's plug and play how different can it be? all 95-99 stuff the ECU's are in the same location and EJ22/EJ25's are plug and play swaps in terms of drivability. 987687
Only thing I've run into swapping computers around is EVAP codes. Took a computer from a 97 legacy (charcoal canister under hood), and put it in a 98 (canister by back wheel). And it threw an EVAP code. Put the 98 computer back in the 98, the code went away. So that, and probably EGR are the important things to match up swapping the computers.
johnceggleston
now that you mention it, i had a bad 98 obw comp and swapped in a 97, i got a evap code and a ''traction control '' code and maybe another one. this took place during a ej22 swap. i worked with it for a while with no solution. i finally swapped in a good 98 and all was good. davebugs
I've only had EVAP workarounds when putting Impreza 2.2's in to replace 2.5's in Outbacks. But they were the same issues I'd run into using Legacy 2.2 donors if the EVAP canister was located a different place on the donor as the recipient. The traditional fornt versus back canister location and the associated metal vacuum line plumbing under the intake mostly. FYI often around here the Impreza 2.2's were 100 less that Legacy 2.2's!
