TheLoyale
Nope, I thought it may not be needed as TomR mentioned. It's a ported vac source, no vac until throttle is opened more than when it's at idle. I did some fine adjustment on it tonight, the carb is now only at 3 turns out and the timing sounds pretty close, it sounds/revs better. I haven't driven it. Maybe tomorrow I will check the timing with a light while the vac advance is plugged, so what that yields.
TheLoyale
The other thing is, I am running out of time to get the rear quarter panels I need. I really do not want to make the fender lips from scratch. If anyone knows of a clean EA81 Wagon/Sedan, can they please cut some stuff out for me? TheLoyale
So I just checked the timing with a light, and I did disconnect the Advance and plug it. The timing marks showed up once I disconnected the advance. So I set the timing to 10* - it seems happy there, smooth and sounds good. Does really have a delay when the secondary opens like it used to. The true test will be driving it. If it still has bucking, then idk. Clutch is the only thing left that I didn't change. Idasho
Told ya. Always adjust timing with dizzy vac line unplugged and capped. Regardless of ported vac source or not, if the engine is running, there is a bit of vac on that line. And if the Carb isnt tuned properly and the throttle plate isnt closed all the way, you will have a good amount of vac. And youve got more tuning to do if you have a significant dead spot when the secondary opens. At what RPM did you set the timing at? Now that you have the timing close, you should start from scratch with a weber tune. Best lean idle.
TheLoyale
That was a typeo. "Doesn't" have the dead spot anymore. I am thinking the carb tune is pretty dead on, I want to see how it starts when the motor is cold. Yeah, my dad was telling me to cap the advance. He's always done that on V8s. learned my lesson. I set the timing while idling about 700rpm, at operating temp. OK, now how does one gain more footwell space? Chop, Cut, Rebuild :-p
1982gl4
OK, now how does one gain more footwell space? Chop, Cut, Rebuild :-p Different seats. or move the stock ones back a bit on the rails. I put those recaros in mine and it made a world of difference.

I have heated Outback seats, I need to build custom brackets for them so I can use the original GL rails. I dunno if the Outback seats are gonna end up being too wide. I dunno if the Outback seats are gonna end up being too wide. I couldn't tell you there. Never tried putting new gen seats in one of mine. I know the recaros where a very tight fit as far as width goes. I can't slide them forward very far with the fwd console (gets wider towards the front unlike the 4wds) as the seats start hitting it, which worked out fine for me as I'm 6ft and don't need to move them forward. It can make the rear seat space a bit tight. I hear you on needing to do something with it though, they are pretty cramped inside.
Subruise
the ob seats are gonna be tight, my buddy ellis has em in his 88wag and theyre tight in there (cant even wedge in a can/bottle) so i can only imagine itll be worse in the 83. i now have access to a cordless sawzall so if we can find it, i can cut it. TheLoyale
Good to know about the seats. Oh man... REEALLLYYY....! Coreless is the shiz, I was gonna try and buy a coreless angle grinder, and ship it to you to use (Obviously haven't bought one yet) Well, if you do peep out an EA81 sometime, that'll be the shilt! I am gonna buy an RX grill from James soon, so if you are still looking for one, I will have one for ya.
Subruise
dude, cordless angle grinder would own. rx grill would look good on silver/warthog/whatever we're calling it. ill ask my buddies if they saw any ea81s in olympia last weekend. does it have to be a wagon or will any 4door work? TheLoyale
I think the Sedan body will work. The fender flares/lips will probably be the same at least. I'll look at some pics.
Mechanical_misfit
Have you though about escort seats? I'm 6ft tall and about 200lbs and fit just fine. These cars are definitely small compared to the ea82 though. The back seat is pretty cramped. Also, I got a pm from you but accidentally deleted it because I have a hard time using usmb on my phone. I assume it was regarding that grill. I'm still out on tour but when I get back I'll get my act together and get it shipped to ya. If I had the money I would buy the wagon off you. But your work so far has been phenomenal, I think you would regret not finishing it this far in to it.
TheLoyale
I didn't think about Escort seats, I heard you swapped them in, I might check the local yards and see if I can find a pair in good shape and color. I like how the Outback seats feel, and that they have a hight adjustable frame. Yeah I just emailed you asking how I could Paypal ya the money. I should have some extra money this weekend, just a heads up. I just have addiction with cars lol, I like too many, but can't really support anymore. 3 is pushing it. But I want an Outback again, either a '95-99 or '01-04. How does Jay Leno pull it off...?
TheLoyale
I am puzzled with this bucking. Timing and Carb are not a factor anymore that I can tell, but this bucking is really bugging me. I am wondering, can the coil be faulty? Perhaps giving sporadic spark? There is no bucking if you romp on it (Drive it like you stole it) But just trying to drive like normal folk is very annoying, take offs aren't always smooth, driving thru parking lots sounding like I'm gonna stall. I smell raw fuel while driving, I may lean the carb by a fraction and see if anything changes that way. But other ideas? What else plagues the EA81? Idasho
What all vac lines do you have on it? Running an EGR?
mcbrat
To answer you question, nope. There is no play in the rotor shaft, I've read about how the bushings like to wear out, but so far, mine are still good. I have not checked the vacuum advance yet, what do I have to do, in order to check it? As for vac lines, I have the vac advance, Booster and the HVAC. Booster and HVAC run off the intake ports, the Vac advance it running off the port in front on the Weber. As for Fuel Filters, I changed the one in the engine bay, but the one by the Fuel pump is unknown. Perhaps I will change that as well when I get paid. DISCOVERY: The bucking will happen at any RPM, but still only before engine load. still sounds like a vac issue... find an empty parking lot, and plug the ports on your manifold for the brake booster and hvac and test what happens... TheLoyale
I just did this, Same deal. I figured it wasn't a vac leak since everything is new, Good to double check though.
TheLoyale
The only options I am left with, with me thinking is either a casting defect somewhere in the carb, or electrical. I may buy a new coil, since they are cheap, and see what that yields. Idles good, drives good with your foot ON the gas. Bucks when your foot is just barely on the gas (Doesn't matter what speed or RPM) It drove like this with the original carb, could this be a compression issue across the cylinders? TheLoyale
What all vac lines do you have on it? Running an EGR? I am running an EA82 EGR. So all the vac lines I have are: HVAC (Runs to Intake port) Vac Advance (Run to Intake Port) Brake Booster EGR (Runs to port off front carb) I have one fuel line running to the carb, No Emissions canister and everything else is capped off. TheLoyale
Few other things. Is fuel suppose to come out of the "Vac Advance port" on the front of the carb? I removed the cap I had on it since I am not using that port, and I found fuel in the cap! Also, how does Back pressure effect these Carbed motors? Even after I repaired the exhaust I have, it still leaks in a spot or two.

mcbrat
in the above weber pic, the "Keep Plugged" I'm assuming you have removed the stock threaded plug and hooked to vac port on EGR valve... that should be okay, as long as you fix the other vac connections... TheLoyale
Mick, that is now the way I have it hooked up (Swapped it around last night to see what happens) So the Vac Advance is now running off that port in front of the carb. And yes the other port on the carb is being used for EGR. So the result, it still runs the same.
