'91 Loyale - EA82 - Nasty Oil leak.

Hi Guys,

 

My beater commuter rig is leaking quite a bit of Oil out of the passenger side of the engine - above near the CAT & axle. Like I said, this is a beater - I paid $500.00 for & don't want to put much time, but especially money into it!

 

What is my best bet to get it reasonably patched up so I can keep beating it?

 

I have already had the timing belts done - pretty recent, so not going there unless I have too....

 

Any ideas as to the most likely culprits & best fix before I tear into it blindly?

Could be blowing it out the head... that is what mine

liked to do..... Hopefully, it is fixed now.....

new head gasket.....

I ran it it for 40k leaking like a pig.........

I would run 20w50 in it. with a quart

of Lucas engine oil stablizer.... that

slowed it down some.........

You need to ascertain where the leak is

don't guess..... I remember not that long

ago.... I didn't run the car for like a month.

or more..... Started it up..... and watched it

drip.... so get under it... while its running....

see if you can see it drip.... Try throwing some

card board under it... after you get home at night

to see where the drops are with respect to the

engine above..... then decide....

don't do this:

that can burn time and frustrate you.

do this:

You need to ascertain where the leak is

don't guess.....

 

is it wet under the valve cover gaskets or grommets? if there's oil there then that is likely the culprit.

 

start looking from the passengers side of the engine underneath. where is it first wet with oil as you start from the outside passengers edge of the motor (valve covers) and work your way in towards the center of the motor?

 

the valve cover gaskets are easy. have a 10mm ratcheting wrench handy. makes the job take 20 minutes instead of an hour. :banghead: it's rather simple though - just remove like one hose and 6 10mm bolts, that's it.

 

the grommets will be in terrible condition, good to replace those while the cover is off. Fel Pro kits sometimes include the gasket and grommets. the grommets are really expensive from Subaru (for what they are, not like they actually cost much).
