mtsmiths
High whine and putting out 14v at idle, pegging ammeter above 2,000 rpm. Any reason why I 'shouldn't' be looking for a replacement over in the marrketplace?

Caboobaroo
also another cause is the bearings could be on the way to failing. Had the same thing happen on my v6 '88 Camaro. I thought it would be all right to drive down to NAPA and get a new belt and a new alternator. Started pulling out and the alternator froze on me and broke the serpentine belt.
