uwjberg
Hi all - just picked up a '91 Legacy wagon. When we made a hard right turn to go up a hill today testing the new tie rod ends, the motor stumbled and nearly cut out before catching again. It was a pretty hard turn, I admit. Seems to run fine any other time. My first thought was fuel starvation, but it has 1/4 tank of gas. Any ideas? Where should I look first?
Fairtax4me
I've had the same thing happen with mine a few times, but it's only when I have about a gallon and a half of fuel left in the tank. The fuel pressure pump is on the right side of the tank, so going fast around a hard right turn pushes all the fuel over the hump in the middle and over to the left side of the tank, then it takes a few seconds for it to flow back. Go fill it up, see how much it takes (it's a 15.9 gallon tank) then go try the same corner again and see if it still does it.

This uphill right turn stumbling related to PCV may be your issue. Edited February 20, 2012 by brus brother
GeneralDisorder
Last time I had that problem on a Legacy it was because the pickup tube that was supposed to be on the bottom of the fuel pump was missing due to some hack replacing the fuel pump and leaving it out. It's a short tube attached to a mesh bag that keeps rocks, birds, and small children out of the pump. GD
Ricearu
the mesh bag he speaks of (some call it the sock) has fallen off. mine did exactly that. Pissed me off when I was driving "spiritedly" through the cloverleaf on my WRX struts/springs and my car would cut an buck and surge.
uwjberg
Thanks for all the ideas. I assume that the mesh bag is a pain to get to since you have to drop the tank to get to the pump?
Frank B
There should be an access cover under the carpet. Under the back seat.

Not at all - just pull the access cover in the trunk area. GD
