renillo
Guys, I have a 96 subaru legacy 2.0 sw (with 132000mi) and i'm going to do my first long trip (8hs aprox). I was wondering, at what speed do you cruise with your legacy ?? Cheers, Fran.
92_rugby_subie
I went to great wolf this weekend, less than 100 miles But I did quite well at 70 mph, and even saw 80 without being in that much worry. I believe at 3000 rpms in 5th I was at 75mph... so I was still being "gas efficient"
Redcap
I cruise between 60 and 70 on I-5, kind of a slowpoke.
renillo
I need to be at 3500 rpms in 5th to run at 75mph. We have different gear relations. That's a good speed. I live in Argentina and in my country is legal to cruise at 81mph, but i dont know if 8 hours at that speed would stressfull to my legacy. Thanks for the post ! Fairtax4me
For any long period of time I keep it around 2500 rpm. Works out to about 60 mph in my 96 sedan 5 speed. I average 33 mpg on trips driving like that.
95legwagon
i drive about 30 miles round trip each day to and from work all highway and my 95 lego never see's below 70..... sometimes if i feel like horsin around with someone ill get it up to 100.....but that only if i KNOW my oil level is ok and its not due for a change...... but 70 usually sometimes 75 if im in a hurry
wavekayaker
I set the cruise on 80 and cruise for hours. I'v done 450 - 500 mile long trips at almost 80 the whole way and it's never a problem. This is a 99 Outbach w/ an EJ22 and a 5sp trans.
LokeDawgg
60 mph is 2900 rpm in my car, geared kinda low... good for mountains :-) I try to keep it below 3000 rpm, otherwise fuel economy gets bad pretty quick. I set the cruise control every time I hop on the freeway unless it's stop-and-go -- way more efficient.
fishy
99 2.2 lego wagon with over 300,000km on it: If I'm not running late I cruise at about 110kph (posted limit is 110). On a good day she'll still return almost 30mpg. Even on winter tires.
nipper
1997 300,000 miles (110 on engine). Depends. If I want gas mileage I stay below 70 (68 sweet spot), if I dont care 75-80. Blu will get up to 90 and I won't notice.
Lukas
We tend to drive a bit faster here in Europe on our Autobahn and our Subies do last long too, so don´t worry about the speed. I´m cruising for hours between 80 mph and 100 mph, my 99 Legacy with EJ20 and 5-speed does between 3500 and 4500 rpm without any problem. I get 26 mpg too, so really not bad. nipper
Thats an imperial (gallon 4.564 Liters) 26mpg, not an American 26 (3.785 L), just a PSA for the locals. Edited February 23, 2012 by nipper
Lukas
I´m talking about the fuel consumption of around 9 litres of fuel on 100km. Now it´s you to do the math...
jboymechanic
My 1996 Legacy Brighton Wagon (2.2 engine with 5MT trans and 3.9 gear ratio) with outback struts and 27 inch tires: If I'm in a hurry on the freeway I cruise at 3000 RPM, so about 75 mph, and I get 24 to 25 mpg. If I'm not in a hurry or on state highways I cruise at 2500 RPM, so about 65 mph, and I get about 31 mpg.
Goobysoobs
I cruise between 60 and 70 on I-5, kind of a slowpoke. Yeah I cruise at this speed as well it served me great on my last cross country trip.

rverdoold
We have been driving our outback 2.5 LPG for 8 hours at 100 m/h (Autobahn!!!) No problems whatsoever. Usually I drive between 60 and 65 to be gentle with the fuel consumption

987687
98 legacy, 243k on the ej25. I run about 75, so right around 3300RPMs. It seems to do just fine. Just did a 1000 mile round trip, and it's all happy.
