bheinen74
My 1985 Brat is going under the knife, lots of surgery and stuff. To start, I have the engine out now. The stock trans was leaking in 3 or more places: leaked at the shift select rod since I purchased it leaked at the driveshaft stubs since i owned it. most recently it must have blown the front seal Oh, and to top it all off, it has always liked popping out of reverse too, since owning Right now, I got the engine out, cause I thought it maybe was rear main leak-NO that is dry from the last time i installed the new clutch 2 years ago. The engine oil never ran low, but the trans did, but the way the oil was spraying and leaking i had to pull apart to see. I removed my 2 year old cork pan gasket, and have resealed it with permatex ultra grey. I am going to toss in another spare 4spd D/R trans, that also look like it has been sitting for years, and it is hard to tell with all the dust, but I think the front seal may be okay as well as the shift select. The very rear tail seal looks to be chunky, and also the axle stub seals, which I have left and right to put in new While the engine is out, I am removing the weber, and going back to a stock carb with the stock intake kidney filter box. My stock CA carb was always junk, but I picked one up from a member here that was from a non ECU car. Also, at some point, some minty stock Brat seats are going to go in replacing my leather seats. Also, getting new front bearings, new front adjustable struts, new transmission mounts, new outer tie rod ends, new front rotors and brake pads, and a new front axle. I thnk that is is. The Dude Abides
Nice job brent, i see your takeing it back to stock form. Are you going to try and replace the sheetmetal you cut out.
bheinen74
I was playing around getting the spare one ready to go. Turns out the speedo is not functioning in it. So, back to my other plan. Reseal up the original one and while i am in there, replace anything that looks worn, possibly using the other spare as parts if i cant get new stuff. . this may take a while. I gotta clean off the old one, it is caked from the stuff on the road Dennis took you me and Mick on, the horse poop road. I have contacted Idasho to see if he can provide a parts list for when he split his open. Guess if I gotta use my Subaru bucks up, this will be the purpose. grr... bheinen74
this pic is borrowed from Idasho. it sure looks like the front seal can be popped out and replaced via the front cover without splitting the case. and i see the seal for the shifter select is accessed too from the back outside. Idasho
Regardless of what it may look like, you cannot access the seal without splitting the case. BTW, I got your PM. There are only a few seals involved. I replaced axle seals, axle nut O-rings, input shaft seal, shifter seal, and output shaft seal. Everything else is sealed using RTV. I use permatex "right stuff" Edited February 23, 2012 by Idasho

It can be installed from front or rear, i did some trial runs with an old seal. No need to even unthread the retainer. just pop a few screws in the old seal, pry out, drive new seal in. There is no lip on the front of the retainer cap. this is on the 4spd D/R I would like to see a pic of where the front seal fits on this. thanks Edited February 23, 2012 by bheinen74
Idasho
I dont have part numbers. I just told the dealer parts guy what I needed, and he had them for me the next day. IIRC the front seal is just a large thin O-ring. You really should remove the retainer on the pass side. Otherwise when things go back together you are stressing the bearings when you torque the case halves together. Ill get a few more pics up shortly. bheinen74
right now, once i see more pics, i think all seals can be replaced without opening it up. I know you say it can't on the front, but i believe it can. Just like the side seals. then i wouldn't need to unscrew the diff side retainers either. i need a pic of the front seal where it goes. it is more a oil seal than o ring if my book is right. I like facts, but i have proven some people wrong on here like replacing speedo drive and driven gears on a auto 4eat when it is still in the car Edited February 23, 2012 by bheinen74
Idasho
You cannot get to it from the front dude. Get it through your thick skull. Here is your proof. Notice the slot on the machined surface that the input shaft housing sits in. Here is an idea of the normal tools you will need. And the one not-so-normal tool you will need. bheinen74
well, can't it be pulled out from the front, slide over the shaft, then slide a new one on and drive it home, all from the front?

bheinen74
yes i see the slot. a seal can be carefully driven there, and some sealer smeared around the outer edge if it gouged.
Idasho
No, it cannot. And BTW, I just remembered another thing. That o-ring is not the input shaft seal. The seal is inside the input shaft housing. The entire assembly, from input shaft splines to that first gear comes out as one piece. Then you disassemble the entire thing on the bench. The seal is inside of it.
mcbrat
Correct. the oil seal is inside the housing, driven in from the inside, and the o-ring is prob 2-3mm below the face of the case. and the "cover" is a one piece unit that the oring is sitting on, and it has a shim/oil guide, and will not come out without splitting the case. I've got the overhaul manual out, and there are good pics showing the exact placements better than the pics in this thread...
bheinen74
I think more pics would benefit showing the placement
mcbrat
oil seal installed inside the holder. only accessible by splitting the trans and removing the holder. with o-ring installed and oiling guide installed installed into the case half... bheinen74
Thank you very much Mick. Now i can see. appreciate you taking the time to pull that up and scan it, and then post to the thread here. I probably would have busted the front piece trying to pull it out, now I can see how it locks in to the case. I like how the first pic shows it broken. That would have been me. bheinen74
with the Brat down, and no wagon, I gotta find a way to get this down to the car wash to power wash the horse poop road grime off before I can tear into it. I spent the other day scraping it with a putty knife.

bheinen74
where to start I ordered 2 input shaft seals from Rock Auto, one was timken brand the other beck arnley. NEITHER seal is correct. grrr. and that is why ordered 2 different art numbers thinking they would maybe send one that is right. Wrong. Got a rush order from rocketseals.com for it coming, hopefully by end of the week. They have everything in stock. AS you can see, i removed my heated outback leather power seats and installed my mint ebay seats today. When i purchased this BRAT the original seats were ratty on the vinyl. Took my 4 years? to find a set of good stockers. Also took the time to install a NOS armrest high rise. Also reinstalled my stock steering wheel, now the 4 spoke is for sale. Outback seats for sale too. The old input shaft seal i pulled out with my index finger, it is hard as glass, no softness left no wonder it was leaky, it was spinning on the shaft... bheinen74
Subaru dealer gave me the wrong wheel seals for the front. They have a big lip on them, the ones i took out are thinner and no lip. Now I am out 18.44 for the 2. Had my dad go to Napa in his town and they ordered some. I already got the new bearings in the right front, new outer tie rod installed, and have the new rotor on and new brakes, ready to install once I get the correct RIGHT wheel seals , new axle from empi ready to go too.
