abeattie220
I have a 95' Imp with an 86' DR 5-spd. The trannys about to role 400,000 and im wondering if its worth a pre-emptive rebuild this summer, or go find another one, or see if my local shop will do it? I have 0 experience with the inner workings of a transmission. Also anyone know if it can be beefed up a little for the extra power output of the 2.2, other then bigger stub shafts? Thanks! Numbchux
Is there something wrong with it? I wouldn't do anything "preemptive". If it ain't broke.... If it needs a rebuild, it can be done. Synchro's are all serviceable, but I'd recommend having a shop do it. It'd be cheaper to just replace it, but worth the money to rebuild it if you want it to last a long time. No, can't be upgraded. Most of the internals are identical to the transmissions put behind the 2.2 from the factory, except the Low Range stuff....only way to beef that up, is to loose it. But it'll be fine. Yea, you could put 25 spline stubs in it....but, again.....if it ain't broke
abeattie220
Its got a nasty rattle that i think is the main output beearing, and the right stub is getting sloppy, and would love to not have to worry about it for a while, dont plan on ditching the car till its totalled. Too much effort put into the whole thing. Edited March 22, 2012 by abeattie220
Gloyale
You can replace the bearings and seals. That's the best that you can do. As far as loose stubs.....that's not a bearing issue. It's actually the carrier and spiders that hold the stub. The spiders just ride inside a hardened lip in the carrier, that get's worn, and that is what causes wobbly stubs. To fix that you need a new carrier. Good news is they can be sourced from ANY 5spd. FWIW, the cost of all the seals and most of the major bearings was about $350 from the dealer last one I did. WoodsWagon
The best thing you could do while you have it apart is put a front LSD in it. The Helical OBX LSD's are reasonably cheap and will hold up fine to the power level your planning. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-Helical-Front-LSD-93-97-Impreza-5sp-M-T-Front-Limited-Slip-Differential-LSD-/180849779113?hash=item2a1b7ca1a9&item=180849779113&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr I never broke a front stub shaft. I did blow out 2 or 3 sets of rear transfer gears and I think one front diff. At least pieces of something got caught between the ring gear and the case and blew the bottom out of the transmission. A LSD front will make a world of difference in how it drives. I was always having issues putting power down especially on rainy days and that was with 235/75r15 tires on it.
