Most things that require OBDII seem to say 1996 or newer vehicles.. Since subaru implemented this in 1995, is there any difference in the data that is output through the port, or is this an actual standard so the datasets from 1995 are the same as 1996? Specifically asking because of this type of thing and the progressive snapshot discount device http://www.amazon.com/ScanGaugeE-Multifunction-Computer-Customizable-Real-Time/dp/B004SK5I46

I'm pretty sure OBDII allows for 'some' manufacturer specific codes, but most will be 'universal'. And, there are 4 (IIRC) 'protocols' for communication.

The emissions sticker - usually on the underside of the hood?, should have OBDII printed on it if that's the system installed. might look similar to;

what codes are you getting or are you having problems reading the codes?

no codes, just wondering if I can use the scangauge e.

If it's OBDII, should be good to go. There were some very cheap code readers from ebay or Harbor Freight that folks had trouble with. They wouldn't read the ISO protocol used by Subaru. But that was a long time ago I read about that.

If it doesn't read, you might be able to read the OBD I system with a blink code and the black (or green?) connectors.

Thats the thing though its not for reading codes, I have a cheap harbor freight one that works for that, the thing I am looking at reads speed, engine rpm, sensor readings etc and calculates real time mpg.

I didn't see Subaru listed as an exception at the scangauge compatibilty page. Does your car's emission sticker have OBDII printed on it? Did your car perhaps originate in Canada?

Maybe re-post your question with a thread title like 'Scangauge Users' and see if anyone has help for you. Or email Scangauge.

The 95's have the normal OBDii interface, the problem with them is they reset the monitors when shut off, so they can't be used for testing emissions compliance. That's why state inspections that use a plug in to check for codes have exemptions for 95-96 subarus.

Hmm was wondering why they used an OBDII plug on the truck in front of me but not my car when I got it tested.

'95 will work fine on the scangauge I'm sure.

But a cheaper (and better IMO) solution is to get a bluetooth to OBD-II adaptor and buy the Torque app for your Android device. About $35 total.

GD

Yeah was looking at the Torque option too especially as I have an older retired android phone sitting around doing nothing.

laws. rules, training. They're going 'by the book' and sticking with year model, instead of looking on an emissions sticker to test it.

Basically, the law probably says " 1996 and up " - instead of - " all OBDII ".

unless you're saying the truck was also a '95 then, I have no idea - maybe call the DOT or w'ever agency runs the testing?
