Prwa101 Posted March 25, 2012 Share Posted March 25, 2012 Well been having some problems with my fiancés car, So I can hear a thumping in the rear, thought it was a wheel bearing lifted the rear up to check it, not the bearings... Started to turn the wheel and I can hear and feel it in the diff? Like when the driveline butts up and goes in to the diff...? And Started snowing the other days, so put her in 4wd, felt like the rear was almost locked up and didnt want to make a turn easy, and put it out of 4wd, hear a KLUNK, was not a good and not a normal noice.... Not sure if this helps but when I take out of 4wd (push button) my trans "klunks" as it disengages not sure why but it hasn't effected anything and my mechanic told me not to worry. It's push button, I've had two of these cars before and it's never done this bad of klunking before so that's what started to make me wonder if somethings going bad... WoodsWagon Posted March 25, 2012 Share Posted March 25, 2012 Rear diffs rarely break if you aren't being stupid with them. I'd be much more suspect of the U-joints in the rear driveshaft. It's pretty easy to unbolt the middle section of driveshaft from the diff and the carrier bearing. If the noise goes away when you drive it, you know that's your problem. Mine clunks when I hit the gas and occasionally when I disengage 4wd they always bind a little when your in 4wd and turning Tire size and pressure is pretty important they all need to be the same size and pressure or things will bind even more. ABawm 88 GL Posted March 26, 2012 Share Posted March 26, 2012 If you drive you car in 4 wheel drive above like 20 mph often and your back wheels aren't slipping it's really bad for the tranny and the diff unless it's AWD obviously.. I've been there and right now I only put it in 4 when I'm in Gravel or Snow... So far it's been making noise for quite a while but If you drive in front all the time I don't think you'll have any problems, Just don't go to 4 unless you have too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Prwa101 Posted March 27, 2012 Author Share Posted March 27, 2012 Well the thumping noice in the back happens at lower speed and seems to fade out the faster you go and it happens when it's not in 4wd. The KLUNK seemed to start at the same time. But I don't know for sure. And yeah I made sure she knew only use it if you have to. It's still drivin!
