I convinced my girlfriend (now my wife) to buy an XT back in 86. She drove it for several years, then I drove it for several years, then I taught my son to drive in it and he drove it for a few years. Finally, we gave it away to a friend a couple of years ago. Very little trouble with it -- had to do the timing belt a couple of times, and a clutch at about 190k kms, but other than that, only stuff like tires and batteries over the 23 or 24 years we drove it.

It was that reliability that lead me to buy a 96 Legacy Outback Wagon from a friend with 273k kms on it. I had a timing chain and water pump put in at around 320k kms. Now, at just under 410k, it needs a head gasket. That's why I'm here. From some very limited poking around (with much more to come), this looks like a great place to get an education.

Thanks in advance for all the great advice that I know I'll get here,

Dennis

Welcome aboard Dennis--and congrats on getting back into a Subaru! Folks here are helpful as all get-out so do ask questions. But get familiar with the "search" function too--just about everything you need to do to a Subie has been documented there at one time or another! :)

Greetings Dennis,

I'm newly registered as well and pretty much in the same boat, although my 92 Loyale is my first Suby. I'm already thinking a 1st gen. Legacy or Imprezza would have have been a better way for me to go. Oh well, good luck with the car.
