3Pin
Need some advice. Just bought a 2001 OB with auto trans. 217K miles. Moves in D and R, but makes horendous knashy clicky noise under pressure. PO put in two new axles 6 months ago. Today, I was barely able to drive it up on a trailer in R. Seems worse (noisier, when turning wheels to steer) PO said cars trans was whinning for about 3 months before it made the big nasty noises it makes now. He drove it almost an hour each way for commuting beofre this. It sounds like a bad front diff. Or could the axles have been put in wrong and just went to hell? Ideas welcome. Fairtax4me
Check fluid? Level low? PO might have pulled the axle stubs out and chewed the seals up, then all the fluid leaked out.
3Pin
I will check in the AM. If the fluid level is low, then then the front diff is probably roasted then correct? And I understand if that is the deal, then a new used trans is probably better then correct?
AdventureSubaru
The diff could be okay. It has a separate fill tube than the trans itself. The long dipstick on the drivers side will be for the trans and takes ATF. The smaller dipstick on the passenger side is for the diff which takes gear oil. 3Pin
I just bought it in Lake Geneva. LOL
AdventureSubaru
Post up a pic if you can. I've probably seen it around. I have a spare trans from an 2000 outback should you end up needing parts.
3Pin
Thanks, that might work. How many miles on the trans and how much if you would consider selling the whole thing?
AdventureSubaru
Unsure of the mileage. I got it from a guy off craigslist a while back. Ended up going with an 03 trans to avoid the delayed forward engagement issue and had a little more history on that trans. The 2000 one is sitting in a few pieces in my garage. I pulled the rear and pan so i could get a good look at things. Would need some RTV and about 15 minutes with a socket wrench to put it in one piece. Checked for any metal shavings etc. Looks good to me (a novice) $100 and it's all yours.
3Pin
What else can you tell me about it? Is it a known working unit? I hate to put it in and then have to take it out. How long has it been sitting? Thanks
Caboobaroo
Sounds like the front diff is gone. Recently did one in a 2000 OBW with a new ring and pinion and seals...
3Pin
Out of curiosity, How much time and $ was it to rebuild it?
AdventureSubaru
It was sold to me as a running builder. One of the bolts was broken where the linkage bolts up. The front diff should be fine.
Caboobaroo
I think I had close to 10 hours plus the cost of parts. Thinking it was right around $1500.
3Pin
Adventuresubaru, I ended up putting a 2001 trans in there after thinking a while about the delayed engage problem on the 2000 trannies. Thanks for the offer though.
