wiring issues

Recommended Posts

I have some wiring gremlins i need to sort out on my 81 brat. I have no headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and my wipers dont work. fortunately for me the online manual program that i use for work. via snap-on. has no information on my vehicle. so i was wondering if anyone knows where i may be able to find a wiring diagram here or somewhere else online. any knowledge is much appreciated. thanks

Check the main power wire going from the fuseable link under the hood (I believe is right near the battery) to the headlight switch. Mine burnt up and I lost all lighting. All I did was run a heavier gauge wire to the switch and cleaned all the contacts on the circuit (grounds by the headlights, all the bulb connectors and such). Worked fine after that. I will see about getting out my '78 FSM and see what wire it is.

Download a Haynes manual from one of the bit torrent sites.

I know the Gen I cars only have one fusible link up front where Caboobaru said. It's usually fine. Mine has been thru hell.

What IS a tricky issue is there's a real tendency for these little glass fuses to go at the ends and look like they're fine when you merely LOOK at them.

Take them off and tug on the ends and even lightly twist. You may be surprised. On my car it seems to be more the lower fuses for the headlights and such. 25 amp guys I'm pretty sure. Get a little mixed box of those - you'll want 15 and 25 for sure , only one 10 I think and that never seems to go.

Check all your grounds like I'm overdue to do. Gotta be a good reason why my fusebox gets so hot sometimes.

Not grounds.

You have a high resistance connection at or inside the fusebox.

Those glass fuses are a pain my 80 brat had 3 that looked good but were broke on the ends and the fuse box likes to corrode. I have a 81 80 and 77 brat here if you need me to look at anything. Mine was having problem with main fusable link power comes in one side of link and out the other mine was burt were it gos to power car ditch the aluiminum power cable to starter will help to add some more grounds and check the power wire on alt also there are some inline fuses under right side of dash

you can also get haynes manual online from Autozone.com. they have a thing where you sign up and you can access digital copies for free for pretty much any vehicle they made a manual for. plus, it legit, so a bit less sketchy than a torrent.

I feel for ya.. I am rewiring an '84 Brat... started undoing crap the previous owner did, then didnt touch it for about a month.. now I have no dash lights when I try the ignition. Have a random fusable link running towards the back of the vehicle I cannot follow to see what it goes to. Two toggle switches.. one apparently for the radiator fans and one for.. something deeper in the dash :P Even has a push button starter wired in.

Unfortunately, I know little about reading electrical diagrams, I am more of a physical look at the setup and rationalize how to fix it. Downside is my '83 Brat is rather different.. has more relays and whatnot (different starter type).

I move to Japan around August so the deadline looms.. havent even put the motor back together yet, shop is being slow honing the cylinder -_- /longwinded
