wilcox
im looking to get more ground clearance out of my soob. what is the best way to do that and what other mods do i need to that it isnt under powered? thanks
WoodsWagon
What kind of subaru is it? Year/body/engine? You get most of the ground clearance from oversized tires, so pick what size tire you want to run and we'll help figure out what size lift/trimming/bashing you'll need.
wilcox
i dont want to go to crazy. im thinking max like a 3"or 4" lift and like 28" to 30" tires. 85' wagon with an ea82 Edited April 9, 2012 by wilcox
Subruise
my advice: lift and trim. also bfh the rear half of front wheel wells, flatten pinch weld therein etc. more lift=less trim but youd have to go huge not to rub at all. good luck, keep askin questions
wilcox
ok, i plan to buy the wheels and tires and fit them, then use a floor jack on the tire to simulate full suspension travel; then turn the wheel and trim accordingly.
TheLoyale
This is how a 2" plus 27" tires sit. 12" under rear diff, 16" under center of car.

wilcox
Here is a picture for ya. I trimmed before I have the fenders repainted. do you have any problems with the tires rubbing at full compression of the suspenion? i measured my 13's with studless snow tires and they are 21.5"; do you think i could get away with something like a 25"-27" with out the lift? With no lift, you are going to have some good rubbing issues with the tops of the fenders, going over train tracks, Driveways ect. Some lift is needed for anything bigger then 24" if I remember right. I have Zero rubber with my 2" lift and 27" tires, even at full lock and compression (Maybe a little with the plastic fender liner) but thats it. Here is a picture with 26.3" tires and no lift, did not drive well.
wilcox
so then what is a good lift to get, ill probably get a 2" or a 3" but where? and can i use the same lift as a bratt
TheLoyale
2" is all you need (And will be the cheapest) SJRLift.com has kits, user name is "Scott In Bellingham". Bill Olmin used to make kits which were called (Boss) his user id is "The Beast I Drive" And no, a Brat kit will not work for a EA82, Brats and other EA81 bodied cars only use two bolts for the front struts, although I think the rear is the same. 45* degree bent brackets. 3" and up, and you will need to drop the engine and rear diff crossmembers to keep the axle geometry happy. And then add a longer steering joint and probably rad hoses and such. 2" is your best bet for a DD and a weekend project.

wilcox
have you ever thought of bfg at's or mt's, or are they too pricey
TheLoyale
have you ever thought of bfg at's or mt's, or are they too pricey They are similar in cost, finding them in 14" was hard at the time, but I guess they brought back the BFG AT in a 195/75/14? or something. But if you are going bigger then 14" rims, it'll be easier to get an offroad tire. I think BFG makes the KM2 in a small enough 15" size, I've seen it on someones wagon. I run KM2s on my 80-series Landcruiser, awesome tire in every condition!
wilcox
so those white wheels on your loyal are 14's? ya im going to try to go with 15's and something as big or smaller than a

If you get all the goodies, Splindles, knuckles struts ect. you could swap in XT6 5 lug on your car, it would be all bolt on and then you could run whatever 5x100 wheel you wanted. Pretty much all 5lug Subaru wheels would work (Except for the 5x114.3 found on STi) Theres an idea
wilcox
so would i have to get all new axel shafts and what not or could i just fab my already existing hub plates, and make that work? ill take a look into it but i like the 6 lug toyota conversion alot! If you were to go the XT6 route, your currant axles should work if I remember (As the XT6 is an EA82 chassis and motor with 2 extra cylinders) And I'm pretty sure the spline count is the same (23) I don't think it is (25) either way, even if thats the case, you can swap CVJ and or DOJ cups around to make it work. I agree, the 6 lug is a lot quicker and easier, plus cheaper. I know the XT6 swap stuff is costly, its like gold so I've been told Haha.
