88 gl automatic transmission problem

Recommended Posts

Transmission is a 3 speed auto, P R D 2 1, with push button 4WD. Symptoms: Park is ok. P to R - wheels start forward for about a second, then stop as if locked. Neutral - wheels turn forwards. 1st - wheels turn forwards at relatively slow speed. 1st to 2nd - wheels turn forwards at higher speed. 2nd to D - shifts to yet higher speed. D to Neutral - wheels continue turning forwards even after braking to a stop. Neutral to R, (after braking wheels to a stop) - wheels remain stationary as if locked. Work to date: 1. Removed, cleaned, deburred, re-installed governer. No sign of apple coring on metal gear. 2. Removed, cleaned, re-installed valve body. 3. Installed new step-down vacuum diaphragm. Was leaking anyway and burning tranny fluid thru the manifold. 4. Removed, cleaned, re-installed brake band acuator. 5. Completely flushed old fluid out return line from radiator. I'm at a loss where to go next. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Shift linkage adjustment appears correct. The shift position on the dash matches the internal indent position. Some input on when the brake band is actuated and when the hydraulic clutch is actuated would help.

But he can Try Something First: Pour a Complete can of Seafoam TransTune, Drive it in First and all the Shifter Positions it does Move for some Time (at least a Day) then Remove the Auto Trans for a Complete Flush and Cleaning its internal Filters; then Pour Fresh Fluid there.

Usually it Helps Many Auto Trans with Sticking / Clogged Valves; I Just did that on my Wife's Car with the 4EAT.

Kind Regards.

This is one of those things I cant diagnose from the desrpition, but I am going to go out on a limb and say due to its age it is tired and needs to be replaced.

You can try an addative as a last ditch thing, May buy time.

Bent shifter rod? i have had a few 3at's where you had to ram it into park, and one that got out of whack from off roading. try manually actuating the positions from the trans end and see what happens.

Mine is bent like that. Park is between P&R R is N, D is 2.

Thanks for the suggestions. Appreciate it. I'm going to try the SeaFoam first, then, if that doesn't work, probably replace it. Does anyone have, or, know where to get, an exploded, or, cut away view of the tranny?
