88xt6joe
I can't figure out why now that it is warming up my gas milage has gone down the crapper. I think I can smell gas but I can't find a gas leak anywhere I've been putting in fuel injector cleaner but it doesn't seem to be getting better. Does anyone have any idea what I should check. This weekend I'm gonna put some new plugs in and see if that does anything. This is on my 88 gl wagon 1.8 FI auto. Thanks in advance, Joe
Stupidru
this topic almost always starts an arguement...but what the hay...here goes...the only cleaner I found benefitial is a bottle of chevron w/ techron...but skip swears by seafoam. I'd track down the fuel smell 1st...look over the injectors really well.
c150L
My 88 wagon did same and smelled same. I couldn't find the leak. Couple weeks later, I noticed that the fuel pump had rusted out and it leaked when running. Replaced FP, milage instantly went back to 27.5 mpg average. 88xt6joe
Thanks for the replys. I have been using the sea-foam. Yeah my gas milage is down to 18mpg. My motor has 181,000 on it. Thanks, Joe
Stupidru
Actually thats not too bad, thats what I average on mine, but mine has a turbo. If you were getting better & it suddenly dropped, i'd look for leaks like c150l said. Try a bottle of chevronw/techron, its cheap.

greggbrat
If you are going to use a fuel cleaner I recommend BG44K. Its about 20 bucks a can at NAPA but this stuff rocks. It cleans the entire fuel system and the combustion chamber.
subusolo2nut
We use BG 44K at the shop when everything else fails--Great stuff!! Interesting one for everyone--I have been using NGK B7ET (Mazda RX7 plugs) in my '85 Hatch & my Wife's '89 GL Loyale--they seem to give 1 to 3 more MPG--These are trinary electrode plugs--not to be confused with "splitfire" plugs--I won't put those in my worst enemy's car!! Your "mileage" may vary--and you would need to play with the heat range I started using them about 10 yrs ago--we were building MGB performance engines & indexing standard plugs, so just for play we put a set in a engine we had on the dyno--it made 6HP more with all other factors the same---
