Urdli
Hello everyone I had two 80's subaru in my life and, believe me, they are hard to find in France. I had a Leone 1800 4WD and a Brat. Today i can buy a XT from 1985 with 90000kms. The problem is that I dont know a lot about mecanic, if someone could give me tips on what to check before buying it. Thank you very much for greeting me on the forum
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Welcome! Check the Engine's Maintenance History... How long time ago were Changed the Timing Belts? The XT came with the EA82 and the EA82T (Turbo) Engines, the First one is Durable but the Second one has Bad Reputation. Both can Develop a "Tik Tik" Sound on the Valves, that is commonly known here as the "Tick of Death" (T.O.D.) But that isn't too bad, it is done by the Hydraulic Lifters, usually because a Fail on the Oil Pump / Oil Pump's "Mickey Mouse" Shaped seal letting Air mix with engine's Oil. There's a Whole World of Subaru information here... Could you Post Pictures of that XT and your Old Subies? We Love Pictures here! Kind Regards. Urdli
Thanks for the welcome I dont have pictures of my old ones, they are gone with my old hard drive I have to get the XT out of the owners garage, it's broken for years, we didnt manage to open it yet. The car is in there for 5 years now, he didnt even start it, it's an old guy that cant drive anymore. What i saw under the plastic cover over the car : it's a turbo for sure, it's white, i didnt see rust, even the inside is perfect, it's an automatic. He said it's 140cv but he couldnt really remember details about it. We didnt manage to open the hood because of this platic cover, i hope i can open that garage next time i go there, i need to check the engine properly because it's really expensive but unique in this condition in France. Why has the turbo such a bad reputation and what are the timing belts ? It's hard to find info in France, even the specialist of old cars i had on the phone at Subaru France dont know that car I think you can count on 1 hand the number of XT over here. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
I will Love to see Pictures of that XT... Could you post some when you obtain it? The Turbo on the EA82 Engine, pushes it to its Limits and Needs much attention, specially to its Hoses (Tiny & Big ones) but if it is well maintaned, it will Last for Years, and the XT is a Fast, nice & Rare Car. The Timing Belts are the Rubber Bands Hiding inside the Black Plastic Covers in Front of the Engine; it has Two, one for each head to Move the Valves... I'm Sure that you will need to Change 'em Soon, because they become brittle and could Fail with Age, despite its Mileage. So I Kindly suggest you to Change ALL the Hoses, Vacuum Hoses and Fluids as Soon as Possible. Kind Regards.
