987687
So the pass inner boot on my GL keeps getting cooked, probably the cat is getting too hot and cooking it, or whatever. I'll make sure it's not overheating and make a shield. But that's not the point here, I need to replace the inner boot. I could go buy the cheapest one on rockauto like I usually do OR... Is there a better choice? Is there a boot that has more flex, heat resistent, wear resistent, or whatever that I should try? Or are they all more or less the same Also, I know automatic axles have different splines, but are the boot diameters the same? Ie. will an auto boot work on a manual axle. presslab
I had the same problem with the boot near the catalytic converter on my turbo motor. I kept going through regular rubber boots, and then I bought a silicone one and it's been great for a few years. The silicone one is softer so you'll need to be careful on the tightening of the clamps, but it's very flexible and heat resistant. I should have the part number at home, I'll post it up this evening.
idosubaru
that's good to know, how can you tell which ones are silicon? there are companies that make more robust CV boots though i've never heard of them being used on Subaru's i can't see why it would be a big deal to find one the right diameter on each side and call it a day. you can google them and contact them if you wanted. 987687
I'd really like to know if auto and manual boots change. Anyone know?
TheLoyale
I'd really like to know if auto and manual boots change. Anyone know? I've never seen that. Doesn't even matter what Spline (23-25) I used an EJ axle boot on my EA axle once, fit perfect.
987687
Ah, it's probably the same thing if it's the same with EJ. I'm pretty sure it is, just curious. I've found some better kits listed as automatic not as manual. So I wasn't sure. I broke the retainer ring taking it apart (it was wicked stuck and bent up). So I want a kit that comes with one of those...

Tho closest kit is in Ohio, not only is it expensive, they want $10 shipping. So it's faster, cheaper, and easier to order it online.
TheLoyale
Well, see if you can get boot clamps like this. They are SOOO much easier to install with simple tools (Pliers and or Wire cutters to crimp the locking end) http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1029721 Cheers. I can take them apart and put them back together without ruining them. I have a tricky trick I mean the retaining ring that keeps the axle together. The one you have to pop out to get the cup off the axle assy. That was stuck in the groove and bent up coming out.
TheLoyale
OH! That ring. gotcha. How was the Snap ring on the Axle its self which holds the Ball retainer ring/race onto the shaft? I know those like to get bent. Glad you got the old boot clamps off!
presslab
Ok, I think this is the part number "Raybestos 8168038". The silicone boot is gray in color, although I don't think gray=silicone necessarily.
987687
Presslab: Thank you! I'll look that up. TheLoyale: I haven't taken the snap ring off yet that holds the race/balls on. But I did notice that a lot of kits include that, so I figured it might be a common situation for it to break/bend.
czny
Don't know what manufacturer you prefer but here's a link to the Empi site for catalogs & silicone vs neoprene boots: http://www.empius.com/2004_ab_joints_rpcomp/2004_ab_joints_rpcomp.html
presslab
Rockauto lists that boot as "Optional heat resistant material." Here is the photo:
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
When it comes to Boot Clamps, is even... ... faster, cheaper, and easier... ...to use GOOD QUALITY Zip Ties: They hold Great there, even with the 2" Lift on my BumbleBeast. Kind Regards.
987687
I'd never thought of zip ties! That's a great idea. Usually I just use bailing wire to secure the boots on. Zip ties is a good idea.
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
I've used 'em for Many Many Years without any failure, in more Cars, not only in my Subarus. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118248 But you Must Keep in Mind that you Shall use the Best ones that you could buy... Don't use Cheap ones with poor quality. Kind Regards.
idosubaru
I haven't taken the snap ring off yet kits i've bought off of Rockauto sometimes don't have the right size rings/circlips in them so i just reuse them. if you're buying it for that hardware make sure it's going to have the right one.
