Rear Suspension Arm - Can it be fixed?

Recommended Posts

Pulled the bearing out of the rear suspension arm and after cleaning it I noticed that where the outer seal goes is warped on the inside. Maybe a machine shop can fix it? This is off of a 4WD EA82 1987 GL. I took a couple pictures. Any advice would be very appreciated. Thinking I need to go find a pick and pull if I can find one with an older Subaru.

It does't look like that'll allow the seal to seat all the way in. And it'll probably leak. At the very least use a dremel or something and make a flat place for the inside of the seal to mount, then yea, possibly use rtv around it to seal it.

Personally, I'd just source one that isn't buggered up. A properly done rear wheel bearing will last the rest of the life of the car. Do it properly and never touch it again.

previous history may dictate on what you can and can't do. was it previously holding the seal and grease in place? if so then that tells you you got a chance.

otherwise that looks fairly terrible. is that where the seal sits? if it is how did it get warn down - was the seal missing or out of place or...?

someone likely has an extra arm lying around, i had one at one point.....i still might actually, i can't remember if i kept it or not. shipping wouldn't be fun....

Just found this on Ebay. It looks exactly the same and I get the brakes and the other sides arm. Wonder how much the shipping would cost; can't be more than $50 I would think.

It came off of a Brat Would it fit my gl hatchback?

No, the ea81 ones are smaller. It has to be off an ea82.

Thanks for the advice 987687, I almost bought those on ebay. If anyone has the drivers side rear arm and maybe the brake assembly let me know.

This was the result of the cotter pin coming off causing the wheel and hub to come off while the vehicle was in motion; luckily while only going like 5mph. I assume the brake assembly hitting the ground is what caused all this. After putting the thing back together and driving it home 15 miles the bearing did not sound so good. Wish I would have had the money to tow it at the time. The bearing came out in pieces; I'm not sure how the wheel was even turning. The seal was still in there pretty good when I took it out.

Anyone have suggestions on where I can find another Arm? None of the salvage yards around here have older Subaru's. I don't want to waste a $50 bearing trying to use this arm. Called salvage yards and searched the internet all day.
