ontherun987
I am just wondering about locking gas caps, If there are any the work better than others. I came up with a 1/4 of a tank missing in my 1987 gl.

I thought subaru's had an anti-siphon screen in the filler neck. I know my 91 legacy did....as the damn thing rusted and fell into the rubber hose. Uberoo
would you rather have someone stick a hose down your tank and steal a couple gallons of gas or would you rather have them cut a fuel line or worse punch a hole in your gas tank to get the gas? same reason that I rarely lock my car.I would rather have them open a door and steal my stuff, than have them break a window AND steal my stuff.course I would rather them not touch my stuff to begin with.Normally dont have people in my car anyway.I don't keep valuables in the car.The only things they will find are wrappers and other assorted trash,if they take that there doing me a favor. theres the car itself, but every single one of my cars is easily identifiable. My subaru- its the ONLY lifted subaru around here.My datsun 200sx- its the ONLY one ive seen around here, not to mention its blue with white racing stripes-totally blends in a crowd... so if a car got stolen I would be telling it to the officer as someone else is pulling them over..." ya its the blue datsun with with white racing stripes that sounds like a popcorn maker at idle..." one thing nice about living in a small town. l75eya
I don't think that's the right mentality to approach this situation with.. Much easier to siphon gas right out of the tank than to start nosing around for fuel lines and more-over actually punch a hole into a gas tank. And personally, regarding the locking/unlocking of the car...after experiencing first-hand just how easy it is to break into these cars (locked my keys in the GL last week; took me about 15 seconds to get in), I don't keep anything of value in them ever, anymore. How'd they get your gas door open? Just pried it out?

Took out a quarter of a tank only? Are you sure your gas gauge is reading correctly. See if the gas gauge is stuck. Sometimes they read funny, but normalize eventually and give correct readings. Anyway, some options here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/part-finder/slide-show/1987/Subaru/GL/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=GL%7C59&Make=Subaru%7C13&Year=1987%7C1987&vehicleType=5&brand=&partsNode=15735781&carId=
xbeerd
my gas gauge is ALL over the place. everytime i start the car its different. i would lean rowards the gauge being off if there is no physical damage. i could totally see someone punching a hole in the bottom of the tank, explosive fumes are at the top! i wouldnt do it, but it wouldnt suprise me. broke people do some messed up stuff! skingry
I used to live in a high crime area in Atlanta where this sort of thing would happen on the regular. Any locking cap will work, all you have to do is make your car one iota more difficult than the next car that doesn't have a locking cap. Trust me, thieves are the lazy... if they weren't they'd get what they wanted in an honest fashion.

Does your filler door not close properly? Did they pry it open? The idea is that they'd have to be in the car to open the gas tank door. I can relate....I put locking caps on my old EA81's since they don't have a closing door.
ontherun987
How'd they get your gas door open? Just pried it out? My best guess, is that some in my family left one of my doors unlocked. I have been thinking about install something like this, any thoughts? http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Central-Unlock-Conversion-actuators/dp/B0033YECEK/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1JE4Y862DTDVF&colid=3ME7RUO0IWVOS
