Rebuilding 1990 1.8l loyale

Recommended Posts

I just bought a AWD Turbo loyale for 200 bucks last week. Got it home to find out it has a bad rod bearing. So i am in the process of pulling it out so i can rebeuild it.. But am looking to see where i can find some aftermarket motor parts. I am going to do a full motor rebuild and would like to get some more more out of it. Any help would be great i am totally new to the subarus.

Thanks

You'll want a 1990-95 Legacy for the EJ22 2.2 motor. It is a Duel port engine, which means you can run Headers on it, and it is still a Non-interference motor, single timing belt, pretty bullet proof. You'll need a Bellhousing adaptor, re-drilled fly wheel, complete cut-down engine wire harness, to do an EJ swap correctly, so it looks good, not just a spliced in mess, it'll take a little time.

I personally would rebuild the EA82T, there isn't much for hop-ups though. Delta-cams Torque or 1000-grind.

You will also still be using the stock EA82 radiator, but you will have to make a custom Upper and lower hose, as the EA82 hose is smaller then the EJ22 hose. So, you'll have to do the old "Hose in a Hose" with clamps trick.

You can not run the EJ22 radiator, will not fit in the Loyales radiator support.

You will also need a custom engine pitch rod, the EA82 pitch rod is to long, the EJ22 pitch rod is to short.

Fast/Reliable/Cheap

Choose 2...

EA82T could be cheap and *semi* fast but not very reliable (terrible motor, cooling issues, bad design, search EA82T)

EJ22 is fast and way more reliable than the EA82T (115vs135 horsepower roughly and bulletproof)

Reliable and cheap... EA81 swap it

A motor is only as good as you treat it. Over boost it, and drive it hard all the time, and the EJ22 will fail.

A decently gone over EA82T, with low boost and driven like a normal car with the occasional open up, and you'll be fine. I truly don't see how the EA82T can be worse then the EA82, and mine has served me well for over 6 years now.

Its not a performance engine, don't treat it as such. Although, these motors are happy with higher RPMs (Mine runs at 4,100rpm at 65mph) don't be shy with the RPMs :)

4100 @ 65!? HTF (How the eff) Im at like 75 @ 3000...

Edit: Nevermind, lift and bigger tires huh?

Idk, Ive personally seen some very abused EJ18s and EJ22s that just keep taking the abuse... whereas Ive seen an abused EA82T running on 3 cylinders, pushed too hard to get the power and then pegging the temp...

Personally, if you want a real NOTICEABLE performance upgrade and reliability upgrade, toss the money out for an EJ swap... you wont regret it and youll definitely get more miles out of it.

Right on guys thanks for all the good information. I think for the time being im just gonna rebuild the EA82T. and go with that for a while. Its just gonna be my little work car for now. But a little ways down the road i am gonig to lift it and and throw some tires and wheels. And thats when i might do the swap.

Thanks

You can not run the EJ22 radiator, will not fit in the Loyales radiator support.

Interesting, does this mean that I should remove the EJ22 radiator that I have run for over 60,000 miles and put an EA82 one in because the one I'm running obviously doesn't fit?

I was under the inpression the EJ rad was taller then the EA82? Perhaps this only applies to EA81 bodied cars.

Your gonna be late to work alot :)

Really don't bother. Were not hating on your ideas....we are giving you the best advice.

EJ22.

Don't waste time and money on the EA82T. You'll have a harder time finding parts. If it ran fine and was just leaky....sure....keep it goin with a little service. But if it already is shot, and needs a rebuild....put the effort into a more productive project.

IN all likelyhood, that engine isn't gonna be rebuildable. Spun bearing, shifted sleeves, and cracks in the exhaust ports of the heads. Who knows what you'll find.

Your car is a great EJ candidate. You've already got a F.I. fuel pump.

You've got the MPFI ECU plug to find your Tach, VSS, CEL, Nuetral switch, start signal, and switched power.

Read the EJ swap tutorial. and start looking for donors.

my 3at runs about 4k at 65 with stock tires... Yov've been speeding!..lol

As for the ea82t they are ok when maintained properly

You could rebuild it with spfi pistons to up the c/r throw some delta cams adjustable fpr and injectors from a 83nissan 280z turbo. Then run stock boost and enjoy.

Or for roughly the same Price and ammount of work and you can ej it.

High comp EA82Ts don't last long. Still not as much HP as a stock 2.2.

I think you could do an EJ swap for half of the rebuild/delta/piston swap/280z injectors setup.

When my speedo says 65, I'm really going 70ish. 27" tires will do that to ya

To the OP, I would pull apart the motor and see what in all you would need to replace, upon that discovery is when I would make decision to rebuild the EA82T or start looking for a good Duel-Port EJ22. :)

Lots of good information on here guys. I think im going to do what "Theloyale" said. I should have the motor all pulled out of the car tonight. Then im gonna tear it down and check for all the damage. If nothing is to messed up its deff getting rebuilt cause im getting all the machine work done for nothing.

thanks

And i will keep you guys posted on how it goes.
