Loyale front end & more

Recommended Posts

I think I've killed my Subaru...due to being too broke to fix the front end issue last year.

Background: '93 Loyale with rebuilt engine installed in 2007. I purchased the car from a friend in 2008, found an oil leak, and the bolts around the oilpan were fingertip loose...tightened them.

Symptoms now:

1) Butterscotch pudding on underside of oil cap, haven't looked in radiator for oil yet.

2) Gutless on uphills, hesitant upon acceleration, have to be careful how much gas I give it, too much and the engine struggles. Back off the gas, and the engine runs steady but gutlessly uphill.

3) Front end issue ($$$?) told about a year+ ago I needed to replace the ball joint(s). 3 days ago the FWD quit working, put it into 4WD and backed it into a parking place, car is still in same random parking lot. Prior to this, tires were wearing quickly and unevenly from inside out. Had to replace summer tires and winters are now ruined as well due to uneven wear pattern.

Also needs new windshield ...and rear window has rust around it...

Body is in great shape with rust that can be taken care of with a grinder and some Tremclad. Underside of body was sprayed with rust protector by a previous owner.

So... fix, or give/sell to wrecker/Subie enthusiast?

Any Advice out there?

The later the car the more expensive to fix,Autos on later models cost between $4500- $8000 to fix,Manuals more like $3500.

Your old subie can be fixed chaeply from a wreckers plus aftermarket parts in a lot of cases.

If the body is passable some work will give you maybe another 4-5 years to save for a replacement Walking sucks.

You've got a broken front CV axle.

I hope these prices reflect some exchange rate:dead:

Local trans rebuilders here do manuals for about $1200. Automatics $2000+

Pretty sure you can order a brand new from Subaru, Automatic for less than you are quoting for a rebuild.

And he doesn't need a trans. Busted axle.

Sometimes those old oil caps don't seal to well and you get a bit of condensation on them. Changing your oil wouldn't hurt. Check your coolant too though!

When was the last time this car had a tune up? check your plugs and air filter first. I had a similar problem on one of mine and did a good tune up and fuel filter change and my problems went away
