Acceleration problems

Featured Replies

Hi...I have a 98 Legacy Brighton SW automatic w/320,000 miles. The car continues to run and accelerate VERY slowly w/high rpms between 20-30 mph when starting out in the AM in town driving. At 30mph, it feels like the engine engages. Once at highway speeds, it has no acceleration problems, but when it slows to a stop at a light, and then accelerates again, the 20-30 mph problems reoccur.

In the PM the car runs through 20-30 mph O to the highway, but again, when stopping and accelerating, the 20-30mph occurs when driving around town.

I checked the tranny fluid, and it's OK. I replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor, this problem is still occurring. I have replaced the fuel pump.

Any ideas?

Is the transmission using first gear?

If it was only using 2-3-4 it would be rather sluggish accelerating up to 15 or 20mph.

Is the tranny fluid full? What color is it and what does it smell like?

What happens if you start off in D2

Also, what happens if you were to down-shift to D1 while traveling say 15 or 20 MPH? does it try to slow itself down? if not, like they were saying, I'd say its likely the transmission, or something in the area at least..

The tranny fluid is full and is clear pinkish. I'll try D1 & D2 tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. The slipping is starting to occur at higher speeds now...

I'm going to change the transmission with one of 135,000. The slipping is working its way up into higher speeds.
