1-3-2-4
So as you might know I got my replacement used 98 Forester transmission yesterday with 86K on it I was wondering because near the rear near the tail housing is a dark spot I was curious are the common leak points at the top assess plate and the rear tail housing? Not a good picture but here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=109154&highlight=manual+transmission+leak kinda answered here but I was wondering if I use some anaerobic can I do away with the Subaru gaskets? and the shifter shaft seal looks like it presses in from the inside of the case right? Fairtax4me
Shift shaft seal fits in from the outside. It helps to have the tailhousing out of the way but I wouldn't worry about that one unless you plan to split the case and do the input seal as well. Use anaerobic on the case sections. Ultra grey for the top access plate.
1-3-2-4
Hehe I thought it was you that said don't worry about the input seal at 86K However if you see in my other thread it seems like they may be leaking (axle seals) given by the dark marks on both sides.. I figure now would be better then looking up under the car.
Fairtax4me
Unless you really want to take it apart and put an input seal in it, just put the thing in. That little bit of seepage will just keep the rust away. I actually wiped grease on all the exposed steel parts of the trans I put in my sedan. What's that saying about a pound of cure? Haha but my tranny that's still in the car that leak is excessive.. and I'm not talking about the crack in the case lol.. I think it did most of the lubing for the roll pins. And so far I still can't tell what that metal bracket is for on the right side rear of the transmission Oh wait nevermind I just took a look under my car I still can't see it's purpose.. Fairtax4me
It's a hanger for the exhaust. There's a bracket on the side of the rear cat that bolts to that. The one on your car looks broken. You should get that fixed. Without that bracket the cat and Y pipe will move independently of the engine and trans and can break at the flanges. I think my center pipe is broken.. it's stock.. the rear snapped at the flange like almost clean cut. It seems the part right after the 2nd cat it seems it bends down more then normal? Not that great of a picture but you can see it more walking up to the car from the side. I was going to change that anyways since it's just hanging anyways.. I've got the bolts for it I just need the pipe. I have a replacement 2nd cat brand new and I see what you mean with the bracket the 2nd cat the flange already looks a bit stressed. Fairtax4me
I can see it in the video. Looks like someone welded an aftermarket cat in and they cut/welded the bracket onto the side of the new cat. It's there, but it ain't pretty. The stuff after that is all cut/weld as well. The resonator looks like a cheap glasspack from the auto parts store down the street. 1-3-2-4
Good because I thought it was just me because I don't ever remember seeing a resonator looks like that on any Subaru. I think after the transmission is in I'm going to change the cat since it's stressed at the flange.. Speaking of that the rear 02 sensor I got the front out how about the rear harder or easier then the front?
1-3-2-4
Now that I have the whole exhaust out it does not look aftermarket but that center pipe does not look factory.. one part of the flange already snapped and the rest did when I went to carry it to the basement. it looks brittle between the front headers and the first cat.. I'm not going to touch that right now until next month and I have a 2nd rear cat I'm going to put in but for some reason the doughnut gasket is a tad larger then a stock Subaru one. I'm guessing Napa has doughnut gaskets stock by size in MM? if that's the case I will take a measurement instead of having to bring the cat to the place.
