The '86 Wagon

Thought I would post up a build thread for this. I've had the car for a year and haven't done much to it, being busy with other projects. Now I'm going to focus more on it. :D
Its a 1986 GL wagon. EA82 5speed dual range 4wd. Manual Everything.

When I got the car, the engine was in the back; dissassembled and missing the heads.

I took the EA82 out of this parts wagon to get it moving.

Thats when I got my Brat. This kinda fell to the backburner... and became the parts shed. :lol:

Shes been feeling sorry for herself lately.
Needing to fix or replace the slow leaking tires.

This last week I have been paying more attention to her. I fixed the exaust leak, emptied out all the crap and vacumed her out. Next is a bath and swapping on some tires that don't go flat every other day.

Future plans: EJ22 or frankenmotor swap mated up to the ea82 5speed. Possibly lowering the suspension a little. For now: I just need a vehicle with more space than my Brat. :lol:
I have some spare EA81s... I may do a EA81 swap for now.
The engine I swapped in is in need of a rebuild anyway. Also it chugs gas like an alcoholic for some reason.

Cleaned out all my stuff several months ago, and the interior is spottless.

Been casting out lines for a good fuel-injected donor engine. That will swap out the dying engine in it right now and give me a compression boost. Will keep the carbed intake manifold on, then swap a weber for the hitachi.

Got a question for you guys.
Where does this (green circle) on the hvac booster connect to?

Here is how long the vacum line is, cant find a spot for it to go...
The hvac controls on the dash work right, I already have another line plugged in. Just wondering what this is.

That hose goes to the idle-up diaphram on the manifold, near the throttle linkage. Has a "L" shaped rod that would pull the linkage back some to increase idle speed for when the A/C kicks on.

Looks like you have eliminated your A/C, so it's not needed now.

What exactly makes the spfi ea82 have more compression than the carbed one?

Is it the pistons? Heads? Block? Combination?

 

 

I'm hunting for a fuelinjected longblock... coming up with either blanks or rediculous prices.

Thinking I might just make a hybrid out of my engine if it is possible.

Work has been heaping on the OT, haven't had much time to do any work to this thing.
Finally got the engine stripped down enough to get the heads off and inspect them.
This engine being very weak and having poor compression, I wasn't expecting much.
The engine was a lovely golden orange on the inside, super toasty. :dead:
Once I got the heads off I was not suprised to see cracks between all the valves.
Took the valves out, each intake and exaust port is cracked. These heads are too far gone to repair. :banghead:

Got a little bored the other day and decided to mess around with my friend's replica lip he was throwing away. :lol:

Still no luck finding an engine or heads to swap. Thinking I might just have to step up and do an EJ swap. :grin: Just not looking forward to all those wires. :eek:

Purchased a RX chin spoiler off of Caboobaroo the other day.
Got it all refurbished and installed. :D

For some reason its easier to find this stuff than a good ea82 donor. :lol:
The ej22 swap is really looking good to me right now.
Anyone have an ej they are getting rid of?
The wiring will be beyond me, so I will pay someone to do all the harness work after I buy a tranny adapter and install the engine.

Work has been heaping on the overtime, so I have had virtually no time for this or any other project. But finally it looks like I will have some room to work on this thing.

The thought of spending money on an outdated ea82 rebuild doesn't seem attractive to me anymore. I'm gonna go EJ :headbang:

 

The plan:

Get a first generation legacy donor to get the ej22 and harness from.

Get an ej-ea tranny adaptor.

Install everything non-electronic related.

Have a professional take control of the wiring.

Drive. :burnout:

 

 

A few questions:

Will it be better to take the harness from a manual tranny ej or does it not matter?

Will there be any holdups being that my '86 doesn't already have an ecu? (carbed engine)

 

I know these have been answered already elsewhere so I'll be doing some research, but if anyone wants to shed their wisdom here I'm all ears. ;)

you will need to install fuel lines that(and pump) are rated for the capacity needed for an ej

 

The pump and lines out of a F.I. ea82 should work right?

I'm thinking this build will be a bit slow, the wet season is approaching and I don't have a shop or garage. :(

Spent the majority of the day getting this thing running, driving, and stopping well.
Got new coolant in it, next will be an oil change and tune-up.
This is the first time it has been tabbed since 2009. :lol:

In preparation for tomorrow's Xmas Tree Climb I have been putting in work over the past couple weeks.

 

Resurfaced the flywheel and got an all new clutch, pressure plate, TOB, and pilot bearing.

 

Got my big snow tires on. :burnout:

 

Put the ski racks on for this winter's activities.

 

This engine was also lope-ing like some kind of hotrod and feeling underpowered... Silly wentz. :)

Repositioned the disty and got the plug wires in the correct order and now its running like a top.

 

Got a tool kit, jumper cables, tow chain. All ready for action.

 

I'll add some pictures later, I'm at work at the moment. :-\

I can't have been THAT far off. It ran and gave me 25+mpg! :lol:

 

I won't lie and say I drove like Granny does either. That thing saw plenty of 4500 RPM shifts.
