new t-case possibility *UPDATE*

Recommended Posts

On a local 4x4 msg board I found a lada niva divorced t-case for 40cdn, check this out... it is ft4wd with center diff-lock, 1.2:1 high range reduction, with a low range reduction of just over 2:1 It is less tall than the nissan case, is pretty much up and down style, with a flange outputs that look to be the same as subaru/nissan (Russia is metric right :D ) I've seen nivas surviving around here on 31" + tires and nivas weigh around 2700 so I think this thing could hold up. Just letting you know, I don't know how many nivas there are down in the states though :D

I'm gonna buy it and nothings gonna stop me. I bet I could shoehorn this thing under a 4" lift, and the shifters are very simple :D

Cool, another transfer case and full time. I like the sound of this, the only problem is you need to lift it enough to keep the front diff from hangin down to far. But shouldnt hang up on stuff in the middle of the car, with it not stiking down as much. How much is $40.00 CD over to US Dollars?

like 30 bucks. Lada Nivas are fairly rare, and I don't know if they were sold in the states, so I'm hoping this one never breaks if I use it. I think there is a lada dealer somewhere on vanc island, used to be one right here in sooke... so i can get parts. I might bump my lift up to 4" body 2" suspension and chop the tranny tunnel If I have to.

my source? Some guy is just selling a pile-o-parts out of his yard on island4x4.com and I i saw that in the list, then did some googlin' to find out more info. I call dibs on this one, but I have no idea where there are any more lying around. I don't know much about Nivas other than what their transfer case looks like, I'm gonna phone the guy tomorrow, I'll try to remember to ask him.

nivas aren't bad from what I've seen, a guy I know has one. He puts it through hell and says that the myths about unreliable ladas aren't even close to true. From the number of them that are still around here, I believe him. What I will give is that their body fit and finish is horrible. Oh well, for 6000 US you can get a brand new Samara hatchback with warranty, and about 9-10 000 US gets you a new Niva 4x4.

A recent 4wd magazine here in Oz had a story on the Niva's apparently the transfer case is in high demand over here for conversions as it is bullet proof. Great find for the price!! $40 cdn is about $40 australian, at that price i would buy it too!!

Yeah, we get them - call them a Suzuki Sierra. We also get Daihatsu Rocky as well, those Sierra's have a bit of a cult following like the subes over here, cept it is a LOT easier to get a Sierra hardcore off road ready

Will have to have a look into what they are worth over here...

We are running a Sammi T-Case with the 4:1 Low Range gear set in it, it now will climb a hill at an idle with 31's and either break traction or roll we guess. And also tuck up in the tunnel really nice, all in all a good little package.

Matt

WOW! You have a Sammi case in your Soob already? Sweet! Do you have any pictures? I'd like to see how it goes in there, as opposed to the Nissan / Datsun unit. 4:1 would sure be nice!

UPDATE I went up island and got the niva case 50 bucks cdn with some assorted shaft pieces. Subaru shafts bolt straight up, and the groove to line them up is even a snug fit. it is a shallow t-case with the outputs coming about 5" aside from the input, which isnt perfect but will still work fine. 2 levers stick straight up, one for hi-neutral-lo and one for diff lock (its ft4wd with difflock just like an rx), making for a total of 4 shifters when I get it mounted :brow: (plus dual e-brake) High range reduction of 1.2 to account for increase in tire size, plus 2:1 low reduction. It mounts on pillow blocks which will also make for easy mounting. In other words, DREAM CASE!!! Im jumping up and down happy with it. Im going to continue with my 4" lift, but add an extra 2" suspension, and cut up the tranny tunnel to pack it up in there a few inches. My crawl ratio will be a healthy 46:1. I wish you guys had them in the states because they look to be a great fit, but on the other hand, I'll be the only niva cased ea82 wagon :brow:

FYI there are gearsets for the Sami cases down to 6 to 1 and I heard rumors of ever deeper ones being tested. This is probably overkill but the high range gearing is lowered as well. Great for compensating for bigger tires and lousy R&P gearing.

-without cutting the trans tunnel- it is best to do an 8" I think, a 6" will cause the case to be fairly far down. If you cut up the tunnel I think you could fit it under a 4" but you're pushin it. At 4" the front diff is gonna be a real tight fit and might not fit unless you move it down so it is sticking half below the the crossmember. That is why I am doing suspension lift so that I can keep good diff clearance in case I have to mount the diff lower.

If nobody objects on purity principals there are all kinds of possibilities using adapters but they can get pricey. Picture a Muncie SM420 granny tranny with a 203 reduction section a dana 300 twin stick case behind that.

On the LADA thing. I saw a page featuring a conversion. Guy put a 5cyl Benz diesel into one. Supposed to bolt right up so if you had the tranny as well and wanted a diesel Ru,,,

I looked over a cummins 4cyl turbo diesel and I really thought about it. But the first two questions people ask me is what frame and suspension the BRAT body is on and what engine I have in it. I really love the look on their faces when I tell them it is all subaru. So I decided to stay subaru for the engine rather than go diesel.

i myself am not above crossbreeding powertrains

its mostly a money thing if i have it and can adapt it great

if i can't afford it i dream about it :)

personally if i ever lift this thing i am building i was thinking of a adapted 700-r4<built up a little first> and this np 208 part time transfer case i have and either a solid axle front or swapping in my amc eagle sx/4 ifs front end

or even a toyota ifs so i had manual locking hubs

retaining the stock rear ifs but dropping it down a tad

of if i got really insane a set of 1.5 or 2 ton rockwell military axles front and rear

with multilink suspension

i dunno if that would be a good setup for nightly drives to work might tend to eat gas a little unless i went to a ej20t or something

it would still retain a turbo suby heart though :)

its too easy to swap in another motor

after fooling with the thing trying to figure out how to mount it with a 4" lift, I came up with this solution. The pillow block mounts are too high on the case to bolt to a subframe running front to rear, so I am going to cut up the transmission tunnel just behind the front seat's rear bolts. Then, instead of running a beam from the front lift blocks to the rear (which would be a pain due to lack of space with 4" blocks) I am going to run bars from the from the box section that goes across under the front seats on the topside of the floorpans to the the ledge at the base of the rear seats. The pillow blocks will bolt to these from the bottom, and the t-case should pack in high enough to leave about 3" of the case sticking down from the floorbards. The front diff and driveshaft is gonna be real tight, but I think it will work. I am going to do the rear lift, then the t-case, then the front lift, so I will decide whether to do a straight 6" body lift or a 4/2 lift in the front when I get there. I've got all 4 toyota rims but no tires, Im planning on 235/75 15 or 30"

the only problem with gearing them really nutty low. is that the diff stubs break. i'm looking into fixing that problem as we speak. and if the options i'm looking at for beefing up the drive train fall through... then i have a friend that i might get hooked up with some yota axles... but i'm trying to stay subaru style as much as possible for now.

hey overkiller i lost your ph#. i'll try to look it up on old posts. but send me a line. so when i get back from this deployment we can go hit the woodpecker trail. i might try to make it to pheonix in may before i deploy for good. maybe you could show me some of the trails.
