Hey I had a question for everyone. So the ej22 in my 96 outback 5 speed is shot burns a quart of oil every 300 miles. So I went to the junk yard and I found a ej22 from a 95 legacy automatic for 200 dollars (i need to pull it myself). The only thing is the 95's has a egr valve and mine does not. So can I just switch the intake from my's 96's on to the 95 and be done? or is there more to it then that? Thanks everyone

There's a pipe that runs down from the intake to the drivers cylinder head, and a port drilled out in the head for the EGR. Plug the port in the head and use your intake, it should work fine. Make sure the exhaust matches up (single vs dual port).

the exhaust y-pipe id going to be different so buy that when you buy the engine.

as for the EGR, it is easier to keep the intake that comes with the new engine egr and all. the harness will plug in no problem. but i don't think it will cause any trouble. there will just be some egr stuff that does not report to the computer. or does. no matter. easier than plugging the head, in my opinion.

i would be interested to know how your ej22 is burning a qt. of oil every 300 miles. it must be laying down a smoke screen every time you start the car.

are you sure it isn't leaking oil? they are famous for that. burning oil isn't discussed here much because it is pretty rare, really rare actually. but anything is possible. i bet your engine is black with oil underneath. lots of info on oil leaks if you need it.

my son's 95 lego started leaking oil so fast he had to add oil every time he drove it. turned out a cam seal popped out of the housing. it leaked when running, but was only noticeable when he parked it and what was left in the head dribbled down on to the ground.

yeah, where's it leaking the oil? can yu see any drips or pools if you park it on clean pavement? (hard to find)

you're sure it's burning it out the tailpipe?

I have a 95 that just needed a cam seal along with timing belt kit relacement etc. It also has some small leak still, trying to trace that one down, but when it the cam seal went it was like it was burning oil, but it was burning off the exhaust. prob about how much you're talking too. i just didn't drive it till i got it fixed. now very happy.

:burnout:

I see them burn oil when the oilring spacer gets worn in one spot you can see it on the ring spacer gets a realy shiny spot on it when it gets worn i bitt it cant push the oil scraper rings out enuff and oil bypases the rings needs to be reringed

It's not leaking the oil. The only oil leak it had when I got it was the valve cover gaskets and I replaced them and this thing smokes like a bat out of hell. I also replaced the pcv valve because I thought it was the problem with no change.
This motor has alot of blow by 2
ok, new engine it is.

sounds like you know to look for leaks and replace the oil separator plate on the rear of the block. can't do it after the engine is in.

the 95 is a great engine and the only difference from yours is the EGR you mentioned and the dual exhaust ports on the heads and the needed matching y-pipe.

some yards cut the pipes when they pull the engines. if you can cut / unbolt the 2 bolts between the y-pipe and the cats (or cut the front pipe of the cats, they don't /can't sell those) you can probably pull the engine with the y-pipe attached. but i don't know how that will affect setting the engine down in your car / truck.

They already sold the transmission so the y pipe is off. I think I saw it in the back..I sort of hate to get a motor with a egr valve if I can help it. But for 200 dollars I guess it's worth it. And I already bought a oil specator plate from when I was doing the transmission. the only reason i did not put it on was it already had the metal pate..Sucks 3 of the screws are sized on it or I just reuse that

Plug the EGR hole and you won't have an EGR.

I did the same thing to put an EJ18 in my wheeler, using a 2.2 intake manifold.

I would personally rebuild the engine you've got. A used J-yard engine is a crapshoot. Could end up burning just as much oil, or having a HG issue, or ????.....

You've got a known good runner. Tear it down, put new rings and bearings in the block. New valve stem seals on the heads. Probably end up spending less or the same as buying a used engine.

I herd the engine run and I drove it last year so I know it's fine.. And the motor has no blow by.Plus rebuilding a engine is above my head. How would I go about plugging the hole in the cylinder head?
