iluvdrt
hello, everyone. i recently have been hearing a popping noise when ever i stop and go. i know its not the cv, because they are new and the sound isnt coming from that area. it sounds like its coming from the consol area and can be felt through the passenger floor board. i checked underneath the car for loose tranny mounts, crossmember bolts, and trac bar rigity, and all seems to be in good shape. the control arm bushings seem tight as do the ball joints. i am really stumped on this one. any ideas? it does appear one of motor mounts may be going, but would this make that noise? it does it no matter how hard i accelerate or stop. thanks. Caboobaroo
You might want to check your sway bar mounts. Sometimes if they start to come loose, they will make a "popping" noise like you described. Even if they look to be on there, try to tighten them with a wrench. I know I've driven a car with a loose sway bar bushing in the rear and it was making a popping noise too. Just my $.02:D

iluvdrt
but why would it sound like its in the consol, and also when i stop? i have never had a motor mount make noise like this.
ShawnW
Is your shifter really sloppy? It might be the cushion rubber thing that holds the shifter.
iluvdrt
my shifting is pretty good, but im beginning to think its something of the like. i will check the sway bars as mentioned above, and also take a better look at the shifter. it is a very loud noise, it sounds like the car is going to break in half. it hasnt hindered performance though. bushbasher
this is the race wagon right? so its only 2wd? I was going to say driveshaft but then realized I take 4wd for granted
mtsmiths
My '87 has been doing this for over a year, and we can't find it either. That said, it's been over 15,000 miles and it hasn't goten any worse or shown any other symptoms, other than the exact thing you are describing. baccaruda
it might just sound like it's coming from the console because that's the easiest place for the sound to transmit into the car. did you check the transmission crossmember as well? and see if the exhaust is still mounted and fastened properly and not rubbing on anything. I was going to say driveshaft but then realized I take 4wd for granted no its 4wd, but it is the race wagon. ok, i checked the sway bar and its ok too. i am thinking it is a bushing, but because i obviously dont excert as much force as the engine, i cannot simulate it. i am really leaning towards the bushings in the tranny x member of the passenger trailing arm.
